So, I saw a twit pic showing Scheels selling a #9 Minnesota jersey with a sign saying "Phillip Nelson #9 - University of Minnesota"

It got me thinking. Can they legally do that? Isn't that a NCAA violation? I know they can sell a #9 jersey, and we all would know who it is, but can they market it as a specific player's jersey?

Can the NCAA make billions and pay its athletes the equivalent of minimum wage, room and board? Can the NCAA prevent Gopher fans from contributing to a scholarship fund for Gary Tinsley's kids? Can the NCAA talk about the great morality of "amateurism" and their television contracts in the same speech? I'd don't see why they don't just throw the name on to the back of the jersey. The real money is made when you see the actual jersey on TV.

Thanks for not even coming close to answering my question. I bet if they did put the name on the back of the jersey, you would be the first guy in an uproar about making money off their names.

They can't and the Gophers are not marketing as Nelson's jersey. I'm pretty sure that picture was from the Scheels in Mankato and they put that sign up themselves to try and market on a local kid. The Gophers have nothing to do with the marketing of any of their jerseys, they just license Nike to make them and then Nike sells them to the individual stores.

As to whether Scheels is breaking a rule...its possible, but any heat would go back to them and not to the U.

that would be a weird time to start the uproar. I was fine with being charged thousands to watch him in person and on TV, but once you revealed that the #9 jersey selling so well relative to the other numbers wasn't just a coincidence, I was outraged.
