Go Gophers!!

Wow, this guy is a machine. I knew it would be damn near impossible for him to miss the big ten opener.

I'm shocked. Hope they got things under control down there and he is feeling good. Welcome back Coach Kill!

I just hope the folks at Mayo agree with this. If so... I'm all for it!

Great news, but it just proves that we don't really know anything around here.

WOW!!!!! Who else, even with hearing he might take a leave of absence for the remainder of the season, still had a feeling he'd be back to coach in the big house? I just had a feeling he'd be back, some how, some way, even if it meant coaching from the booth, he'd still be there. THIS IS AWESOME! The guy is a rock.

This. I can't imagine they released him or his wife let him return if things weren't on the up and up. Great news.

Being that he checked himself into the Mayo Clinic to begin with, I'm guessing he got the ok to go back to work. Of course that's just speculation.

not sure how all the different admittance/release policies work in minnesota, but wouldn't they have to agree to release him from their facilities? i.e. he can't just make that determination himself? or is that "ball" entirely in his court in terms of when he wants to/got to leave and they are not able to "force" him to remain there?

anyone familiar with how to answer that question specific to minnesota (i.e. i am guessing hosipital admittance/release policies/laws vary from state to state)?

It generally takes legal action to hold someone in a hospital against their will (assuming that person isn't a minor, vulnerable adult, etc.).

I am with the post above that states I hope doctors ok'd him to coach and this is not Coach Kill's personal decision. I love the heart if it is but I also worry for his health.. Lets hope Coach Kill can stay healthy and continue coaching our football team. I really like the guy and what he brings to the program..

well stated. +1

This sounds correct to me. I worked in a hospital in another state and people could check themselves out of the hospital "AMA" (against medical advice). I'm hoping that that is not what happened in Coach Kill's situation.

I was referring to what Mayo is suggesting. Doctors tell people to "watch what you eat" every day and it gets ignored wholesale. I'm just saying that there is a difference between "There is no reason you can't be back to work on Wednesday and on the sidelines on Saturday" VS "In the end it is your decision but it is our belief you'd benefit from more tests, monitoring, and rest."

I'm just hoping he left the door with the first quote, and not the second one.

Some people wanted Zombie Vince Lombardi, but it appears we got Zombie Jerry Kill!

Get after 'em Coach!

Coach Kill continues to mutate into a higher life-form. What doesn't kill him only makes him stronger.

The Dark Forces are running out of ways to bring him down.

Phil Miller - updated story on Jerry Kill being back to practice

http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/130735208.html

Jerry Kill understands how serious his condition looks to outsiders, and how people worry that his seizures are dangerous.

But he returned to work on Wednesday, just three days after being admitted to Mayo Clinic following another seizure, and declared that he's more worried about a different problem:

The Gophers' 1-3 record.

"I have a complicated issue. It's not something I'm going to die from, but it's complicated right now," Kill said after conducting practice Wednesday. "I got out of the hospital today -- I got out at 11 [a.m.], I was back here at 1 [p.m.] for a coaches' meeting. So it isn't like I'm going home and resting."

No, he's preparing to play Michigan in Ann Arbor this Saturday, and Kill said he will be 100 percent in charge, as always. "The rest of it, I've talked enough about it," he said, clearly impatient that his health has become the focus of the Gophers' season. His doctors "haven't got it all figured out yet, but hopefully they'll make progress on it, and we'll be fine."

Kill said he didn't check himself into Mayo on Sunday, clearly inferring that he was taken there after a seizure. But the coach looked and sounded strong, much better than after the initial seizure and five-day hospital stay earlier this month. He said he felt the Mayo doctors made progress in finding a course of medication that will prevent the seizures from recurring, but once he was healthy enough to return, he did so. "If I'm not here, it's because I'm not able to," Kill said. But the Gophers "hired me to turn this program around, and I have to be here to do that."

Great news, but it just proves that we don't really know anything around here.

Not knowing anything isn't the problem. That's what we do around here. Comment on what we don't know. To be fair, there are still things we don't know about this. Like was this decision made with doctors' approval or is Kill being stubborn and ornery and releasing himself?

There is a problem however when some people take the unknown and use it for their negative purposes. Most of us are concerned about Kill's health not only for his sake but, if we're honest, also for what it portends for the program. That's understandable. What's not understandable is people who use these seizures as an excuse to start digging Kill's coaching grave here. Not only that, several of them give the impression they would only be too happy to dance on that coaching grave. That just sucks.

You can go further with this line of thinking. Most of us are disappointed in the way the team has played in these early games. The biggest disappointment for me is the lack of intensity and the fundamental mistakes. But four games is way too soon to conclude that this coaching staff doesn't have what it takes to build a successful program. Their track record suggests otherwise. Many of their actions suggest otherwise even if we can't see it on the field yet. But already we have people who are absolutely convinced Kill is over his head.

Eventually these people might be right, but right now they are jackasses just stirring the pot. No one poster here is going to affect anything, but in a program with a history like ours, the negativity can have cumulative affect that quickly makes this job that much tougher. I really believe it keeps players from buying in, it affects recruiting, it increases the pressure on the players to produce, it's noticed by parents of players, it affects attendance, and, maybe most importantly, it affects the media in this place.

It's like Kill has been hired to dig Gopher football out of this hole it's been in since the '60's. People can be critical of him and of the team's play, but why go that extra step and proceed to shovel crap into that hole before the guy has even barely gotten started digging?

You know this guy is so strong and is so high in spirits and really wants to be here and coach so bad he comes from 2 seizures to come back. Like he said in that star tribune article he was hired to turn this program around and he needs to be there for that and when i saw that quote from him i knew that he is the guy and is focused and hard working enough to get this team going into the big house and upset them wolverines. This guy works so hard with the team to get things done right and im sure hes getting stuff done right for the michigan so i know it will not be a blow out. Coach kill showed us against USC that he will not allow blow outs here at Minnesota.

Great post! Well said.
