Phil Miller blog: Kill's attitude on Big Ten: It's just football

File this one under "Football Is Not Brain Surgery". There are a lot of stupid people who coach and play the game at every level - including the NFL. Football is about blocking, tackling, no turnovers, no stupid penalties, and making opponents pay for their mistakes. The Killer has it figured out.

Go4Broke: You are right, FB is not brain surgery. However, as a retired proctologist, I still know where lots of peoples' heads are.

I don't remember exactly where, when or why, but several years ago my wife and I were in a social situation at a table with a bunch of strangers. As we got to know them, we found out that one lady was a high school classmate of Bud Grant. When I asked her what he was like back then, the first thing she said is that he wasn't the smartest dude in the world, to put it kindly. (I guess his academic challenges at the U weren't all about lack of effort.) Not that he was a dunce, but he's not a genius by any stretch.

Over the years, this conversation has caused me to reflect on the elusive qualities that make up a successful head coach. It turns out that you don't need a brain the size of the Talosian Keeper's in my avatar. There is a certain skill set, though, including the ability to teach. After watching the Lombardi documentary on HBO, Kill's similar emphasis on fundamentals and execution has me stoked.
