As Adam Weber discussed Da'Jon McKnight's remarkable pair of touchdown catches in the Wisconsin game -- "He has the desire to be a star," Weber said of the sophomore receiver. "He goes up there and fights for the ball." -- a familiar name was invoked during the discussion: Eric Decker.

That got the Gophers' quarterback talking about his former passing-game partner, the All-Big Ten receiver who is still waiting to catch his first pass for the Denver Broncos. Weber said he talks to Decker every week, but since the third-round draft pick has appeared in just three games without a ball thrown his way, they mostly talk about the Gophers.

"He watches all our games. I know in the NFL, guys bet each other on their (college) teams," Weber said. Uh-oh, how's Decker doing in that pool? "Not too well, I guess," Weber said with a pained smile.

Still, Decker likes his situation for the moment, Weber reported. "He's young, and Denver's a great city. It's hard for him to go from being the man in college to having to work his way up again, but he understands he's got to put in his time. I know he's going to develop a great relationship with (Denver quarterbacks) Kyle Orton or Tim Tebow. He's going to be a star eventually."

Decker has also confirmed what Weber said he believed anyway, "that there's nothing like college football," Weber said. "This is special. Obviously it's nice to make a paycheck, but there's not that same camaraderie, that same love for your team."

Which is why, even after five straight losses, even after four years as Minnesota's starter, Weber stands behind a statement he made before the season: He wishes he could play another year.

"I've played with a lot of guys who aren't here anymore, who are out there doing the nine-to-five. I can tell you they'd give up their left arm to come out here and do what we're doing," Weber said. "It's about putting this in perspective. It's hard to do sometimes, you start aching, practices are long, and your mind can play tricks on you. But I put it in perspective. If I could play football for the rest of my life, that would be a good deal."

Go Gophers!!

A lot of guys would love a 5th year. I am glad he doesn't have it so the program can move out of the Weber/Brewster era. If he is as good of a person and leader as everyone says he is, he will have a great life after college.

He's a great kid for sure - a real competitor - but kind of like Don Swanson in ancient times: the QB who played a ton, but never quite made it with the fans.

I've been a Gopher Fan for over half a century AND...

Weber is in many regards is the best Gopher QB I have had the pleasure to root for. Has he been perfect? Of course not. Not even Sandy Stephens was perfect and he was an All-American. Paul Giel was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy award and he was an All-American at Minnesota in football and baseball. His teams didn't win so many games though. Otherwise, I'd have to say that Weber has shown me more heart, class, character and game than any of the others I have seen.

Some of those other qb's had better offensive lines and better running games supporting them. But, Weber has got the records. Weber has answered the call EVERY time he was asked to start. Weber has had more class than the Minnesota fans who have taken to bashing him have...THAT's for sure. And, other quarterback wanna be's have come and gone during the time Weber has been at Minnesota. But, he is still standing today. He is still taking the snaps in the games.

To heck with the bashers! Give 'em hell on Saturday Mr. Weber! Go lead your team to a win over Purdue. And, never let the bashers get you down!

I don't have many complaints about Weber this year. He plays hard, has performed pretty well under difficult circumstances in a situation that has basically set him up to fail.

There are a lot bigger fish to fry here than the starting QB. He's a good guy and I wish him well and thank him for everything he put into the program. I wish the results were better but I'm not going to lay the failures at his feet either.

Weber was much better in the Spread...

2008 was a very good year for him...

I think he'd be better if they'd just picked an offense and stuck with it. Everything's been so schizophrenic in terms of system and staff it's hard for a kid to settle in and succeed. Despite that he hasn't really complained. He's just come in, kept his head down, worked hard and done what he could.

This has been BY FAR Weber's best statistical year. He is pretty much the same QB in either system. Serviceable QB who has some mobility (not great or even good....was never the same after his freshman year...I believe he had a knee injury). Misses some easy throws, doesn't see the middle of the field well. Team leader (as evidenced by his 3 years as captain). Not a complainer even when his line was bad and his running backs weren't doing anything. Even now with a terrible defense he doesn't point the finger.

Statistical during Garbage Time IMO because his numbers between quarters 1-3 aren't impressive at all...

He nearly guarantees himself at least another 50-75 yards, completions & a TD during the 4th Quarter when the game is out of control already (USC, NIU, WISC) & bombs during moments where he can prove he's built to win (USD, NW)...

In My Opinion...

I am talking more of avoiding sacks, INTs, and completion percentage.
As bad as he has been at leading the team to wins, he is lightyears ahead of last year in terms of getting the ball out on time to avoid sacks.

Attempts per INT
Fresh=23.6
Soph=51.25
Jr.=24.5
Sr.=42.75

Attempts per sack (yes I am putting blame for sacks at least partially on QB play)
Fr.=34.5
So.=13.2 Midseason of his sophomore year he seemed to take enough hits where he became gunshy. He was never the same QB till this year.
Jr.=9.7
Sr.=24.4

Completion Percentage
Fr. = 57.5
So. = 62.2
Jr. = 52
Sr. = 59.6

The most telling stat is probably yards per attempt.
Fr. 6.45
So. 6.73
Jr. 7.04
Sr. 8.47
The numbers from his fresh and soph seasons are skewed due to the spread having so many quick, bubble, and tunnel screens.

Does anywhere chart splits like that or are you just making assumptions?

If you look at the ESPN.com splits on him, he is actually better in the close games (which is why they are close). This team has a chance to win if Weber plays well. In the games they haven't had a chance at the end (Wisconsin and USC) he hasn't played well. If this team wins a game it is going to be because __insert QB here___ plays an exceptional game. This team isn't good enough to win games without exceptional QB play.

Come on now...anybody who has watched us play this season knows we pretty much don't do anything on Offense outside of the 4th Quarter...

150 yards against MTSU...it's MTSU tho...
194 against NW in a game he was put in postion to win it...
224 yards against USC with about 40 of those coming on the last drive during garbage time...
250 against Wisc but most came in the 4th quarter after being down by 20+...

his best statistical game was against USD where he had 0 INT's but he had 2 crucial fumbles & overthrew receivers horribly multiple times...

Weber is a case of stats not telling the entire story...

The changing of offensive coordinators and systems has had absolutely zero to do with Weber being a terrible passer. The statistics definitely do not tell the whole story about this. Even when Weber completes a pass they are often just not well thrown. He has a poor touch on short passes and has a difficult time throwing longer passes where his receivers can catch them on the run without slowing down or having to make an acrobatic play on the ball. I have seen almost no improvement in this area since I first started watching Weber at practices during his first year as QB. Weber is a great guy who will be a success in live whatever he chooses to do. But I just can't wait for him to be gone as the Gopher's QB. For almost four years it has been depressing to watch Weber struggle to throw passes which most other QB's make look easy.

I blame that on the offensive philosphy and play calling, not Weber. For three quarters it's mostly run, run, pass on third-and-long, punt. Once we get behind and open up the offense a little, the offense looks better. Is it the '98 Vikings? No. But I think we'd see better results if we threw more early.

Weber is a good dude. I think (and hope) he'll find success in whatever path he chooses after football.

zero!! come on... how can being forced to change your throwing motion by your O-coord. not have some effect?

EVERY qb who starts and plays the whole game gets the "garbage benefit" effect.

That qb from wisky was in there til the end. It goes with the territory.

Every qb I have seen play for Minnesota has benefited from "garbage-time- benefits" big time. Big wins...Big losses...they have all had a chance to pad their numbers. Is it really "padding" IF that is the way Gopher Football consistantly has been for the past thirty five years? I don't think so. I think that is "situation normal..." stuff.

Weber has had to put up with more change and inconsistancy from his coaching staff than any Gopher qb I have EVER seen and followed going back to Giel in the early 50's.

I'll have to say that Weber is the class of the crop of Gopher Quarterbacks just because he got put in SO MANY "no win" situations by his incompetent coaches. And, he has never complained. He has played hurt. He has put up some numbers and will continue to put up some numbers and no Gopher QB in the next fifty years will ever surpass the career numbers this fine young man has achieved. He does NOT deserve the treatment he gets from some people (and you know who you are) around here.

"Walk above and beyond" the bashers Mr. Weber! Never let these bashers trouble you or get you down. You have done WELL...very well given the circurmstances you have had to deal with. No qb can pick his script. You have done VERY well and I want to thank you for having been the warrior that you have been.

Nope

Weber may be a nice guy, but if this is his best season he ranks 8th in the BigTen in both completion percentage and passer efficiency. I think that says a lot. He would have been a great quarterback at a school like WI, but to win games MN needed more than he or most quaterbacks can give.

Agree, he may have the stats but his fumbles, telegraphing passes, poor throws are part of the reason we have not done well. Changing the offense 3 times hasn't helped, but reading the defense should have developed better. This year most of his 'success' it seems has been against the other teams second string.
