John Gasawy, ESPN insiders list of 25 best freshmen from February 14th.

22. Siyani Chambers, G, Harvard Crimson
Chambers is a little turnover-prone, and he's not the last word in efficiency inside the arc, either. In other words, he's a freshman point guard. There's still a lot to like here, even with the occasional giveaway or missed shot. Tommy Amaker's freshman has been a consistent perimeter threat all season, one who draws about four fouls per 40 minutes and shoots 84 percent at the line. The Crimson backcourt has a solid foundation for the foreseeable future.
Previous ranking: 24

Anyone besides me still asking why we didn't recruit a pg who has played that position his entire career?

I'll never understand this board's obsession with Minnesota kids that aren't attending Minnesota. Easily the most boring threads on Gopher Hole. Why not start up another Nate Wolters thread! That sounds like fun.

(This isn't directed at you specifically march madness. Just more in general)

I've been waiting for someone to start a thread about how it appears we didn't miss on guys like Jake White, Shelby Moats, Thomas Schalk, Jonah Travis, Marvin Singleton, Kyle Noreen, or Lucas Brown. Everyone likes to point out the guys that went to lower level schools and have done well, but don't care about the multiple ones we didn't offer that haven't done much, even against worse competition.

It's funny, I'm guessing many of the people complaining now about us not signing some of these guys would have been the sames ones complaining on signing day if we took several guys who's only big conference D-1 offer was the Gophers.

As for Chambers, I'm assuming it might have had to do with several things:
- The coaches felt that Maverick would be just as good of an option this and next year.
- They knew they would be recruiting Tyus or another PG in 2014.

Right now it looks like he will be a good player for years to come and it would be nice to have him on the team. Without seeing him play at all, I will say that he's played really bad against top opponents. Against Memphis, California, and UConn, he combined to shoot 5-28 and committing just as many turnovers (14) as he scored points.

And if he had come to the U, he wouldn't be on this list at all because he would not have seen the court. So looks like it all worked out for him.

Its the most played out topic on GH.

Perfect. We should keep a running list.

I have talked about the need for a pure pg since Nolen left.

I am not sure how good of a ball handler Chambers is? I would assume he is pretty good considering he was Hopkins starting pg for what 3 years. I prefer a solid pg who can penetrate and kick. I would love to have Chambers at pg with Dre at the sg spot. Would/could chambers put up the numbers in the big ten, would he be over matched physically.. maybe who knows? He is the 2nd leading scorer on a pretty good harvard team. Are they big ten caliber, probably not, could they beat penn st at home, maybe. Chambers did have 14p, 7ass, 1 to at umass. He struggled at uconn. he had 7p, 9ass, 2 to at CAL, 16p, 7 ass, 2 to at st. mary's, he struggled at Memphis. I noticed something he had to play all these solid teams on the road as a freshmen and he doenst just initiate the offense he is expected to score which can really increase the turnovers. I could look back at Dre's numbers on the road last year and I'm not sure they would be any better?
I know we cannot offer every MN kid and I know its easy to cherry pick after the fact. But I was wondering why we didnt recruit a pure pg way back when Nolen was a senior. I am not in love with combo guards running the point. Give me your Jaque Vaughn, Mateen Cleeves, and the underappreciated Al Nolen.

Cobbs didn't look impressive when he was here, but again playing with the second teamers can do that to a guy. He looks great for Cal.

I watched a little of the Harvard/Princeton game last week and Siyani looked really good most of the game and then had two turnovers in the last minute and they lost. Even in that league, where you don't expect BigTen size bodies, he looked small. Princeton didn't do anything to exploit the size advantage though. Another note is he is playing 37 minutes a game this year and gets to play through mistakes and make up for it if he can. That would not have happened here, he would have been TubbyStared to the bench early and often.

He would have NEVER had the opportunities to get the minutes he is getting at Harvard here at the U. I do think he is good and could have definitely started for a big ten school his Jr/Sr seasons, but there is a reason why Tubby did not recruit him...he is tiny! He will be a very solid mid major player but he would have averaged (at best) 9mpg here. He is no Nate Wolters!

As best as I can tell there are 2 rules re. Minnesota kids.

1. Do not talk about them on this board.

2. Do not recruit anybody that isn't as good or better than Tyus Jones or Rashad Vaughan.

Did I miss anything?

Yes.

3. Fail to mention any MN kids who don't have college success, unless they play for the Gophers. Then bring it up constantly.

4. Diminish and ignore the idea that you can't sign 5 of one position in one class, regardless of what David Khan believes.

5. Ignore the fact not a single other high major school offered. Just blame Tubby.

6. Ignore the possibility the kids didn't want to play here as wanted to be at a mid major. Just blame Tubby.

7. Insult and criticize out of state players just to build up any Minnesota kids who don't play for Minnesota.

8. Criticize Minnesota kids who do play for Minnesota for not putting up the same stats as Minnesota players not on the Gophers.

9. Don't forget to blame Tubby.

That pretty much sums it up.

Maybe he struggled shooting against UConn but I don't think 9 assists/2 TOs against a Big East school should be considered struggling. Those are pretty decent distribution numbers. Also, 16 points and 7 assists against CAL is pretty good.

I think he could probably fill a roll on the Gophers team as a decent back-up, but where would he fit? Dre is the PG and Austin is the SG. Maverick likely is more physically ready to play in the B1G right now, so I don't think he would nudge his minutes. I know Chambers attended several Gophers games as a prep at Hopkins because I remember seeing him there often. Not sure if it was anything unofficially official or if he was just going as a fan. Maybe Minnesota displayed interest, but I don't think so. I thought I remember seeing him as a four-star recruit somewhere too, but maybe I'm just imagining things.

Watching him play in high school, I remember an undersized pure PG with good ball skillz and decent quickness. His shot was never his strong suit, but he could knock down jumpers if left open (sounds ridiculous but you'd be surprised how valuable it is to make open shots). Good for him. Obviously a book-smart athlete. Hope he uses his degree wisely.
