5. TANNER MORGAN, MINNESOTA
Tanner Morgan emerged on the college football landscape during Week 8 of the 2018 season as a redshirt freshman when Minnesota’s starter Zack Annexstad was knocked out due to injury. Morgan started the rest of the year and was below average, ranking 104th in PFF passing grade. This season was a different story for Morgan, improving his passing grade rank all the way to fourth — tied with Tua Tagovailoa.

Morgan’s 2019 season has been carried by his performance under pressure. He ranked second in PFF passing grade under pressure, behind only Heisman winner Joe Burrow this season. His pocket presence and footwork were vastly improved upon, leading the way to the third-highest rate of accurate-plus passes thrown under pressure (perfectly placed passes to the receiver). Quarterback performance under pressure is unstable year to year, but the way Morgan handled it in 2019 gives a lot of reason to believe he’ll be near the top again in 2020.

The scheme couldn’t be better for Morgan, too. Minnesota executes run-pass options (RPO) at the nation’s fourth-highest rate (45%). An RPO is an extension of the run game — the quarterback has the option to either hand the ball off or pull for a quicker pass. Among 74 qualifying FBS quarterbacks, Morgan ranks first in PFF passing grade when he pulls on an RPO. He took full advantage of these plays, averaging over 3.5 yards more per attempt than the FBS average.

Go Gophers!!

Nice article, thanks for posting. TM definitely deserves the attention.

I'd put Trey Lance on that list. He looked really good today.

Shooter chimes in:

• Pro Football Focus ranked Gophers sophomore Tanner Morgan as the ninth-best quarterback in college football in its end-of-year rankings. It also had two Gophers players in its top 100 NFL draft prospects, with Tyler Johnson at No. 31 and Antoine Winfield Jr. at 77.

Go Gophers!!

Will be very interesting to see if there is any Heisman buzz for Morgan next year. Still feel like he isn't flashy enough to be in the hunt for that particular award but he is certainly performing at close to or above the level of the QBs that are up for it.

If they have a big year it is not a stretch that we could have two guys getting some Heisman buzz with Morgan and Bateman.

Given our history, how crazy is it to think that we could actually have one of the top QBs and WR in all of college football next year?

As for Morgan, it will be interesting to see how the NFL views him. He doesn't have the size, speed, arm strength....etc that they crave. But you also can't overlook how successful he has been. He just strikes me as a guy that will stick around until he graduates but if he starts getting projected high enough you never know.

He doesn’t have the rocket arm, not the prototype NFL teams drool over, but the guy just flat out brings it on the field. So happy he’s our QB.

QB for NDSU. Really looked impressive in today's game. Went the entire season without throwing an interception, and did throw 28 TDs. He also won the Payton Award, which I think is the first time it's been given to a freshman.

Is he coming to the U?
