Good luck to whoever Northwestern trots out there.

It should be Aiden Smith, who had the amazing stat line of 7/13 for 76 yards, 0 touchdowns and 2 picks against the worst defense in all of the FBS. He's gonna have a bad day.

This is a very nice stat, but we have played against more than our share of backup QBs this year.

Having been a Gopher Fan for the last 20-years, I've seen some of our defenses make a back-up quarterback look like a Heisman Candidate. As long as we're talking Northwestern, I remember (Metrodome days) we faced a 3rd string Northwestern Quarterback (Kafka?) who put on over 200 yards rushing on us. Plus he went 12-16 passing for 150 yards - 2 touchdowns.

This used to be the norm for us. So even though skewed a bit, I'm very thankful to be where we are.

As recently as 2017, when Maryland came to TCF Bank with a third-string QB called Bortenschlager and mopped the floor against the Gophers. Asterick or not, the stat is impressive.

Wasn't 2017 Year Zero? So that doesn't count, right?;)

Well, this is a good news, bad news kind of thing. The good news is our performance ranking. The bad news is that we have a certain chance of playing one and a fair chance of playing three (Wisconsin, OSU, Oregon) of the remaining four of that leading group during the remainder of our season.

I see it as a great chance to move up in the ranking. We'd be the only one of those teams to not play Tanner Morgan.

I think the backup QB thing has been overblown. Putting aside the fact that other teams are playing against those same backups in most situations, the starters we missed aren’t exactly having All-Conference caliber seasons.

let’s take a look:

SDSU: Their starter played the entire game.

Fresno: Their starter played the entire game.

GSU: Their backup played, but their starter is not having a good year. He’s rated 93rd in the country by PFF. I think it’s a wash between the 2 QBs

Purdue: We faced their starting QB until he got injured, and he wasn’t sharp at all.Plummer played OK as his replacement.

Illinois: We faced their starter until he got injured. Let’s be honest, he sucked in that game before he left.

Nebraska: Faced the backup, so we avoided the #85 ranked QB in the country. He’s still better than the backup, but their offense has struggled with either QB all season.

Rutgers: Does anyone think it matters? 11 other teams have Rutgers on their schedule too. Which QB did OSU face? Do they get an asterisk too?

Maryland: We faced their starter, and he was ineffective.

Penn State: We faced their starter, and he had his worst game of the year.

Iowa: We faced their starter.

Northwestern: They suck regardless of who they put back there. if we get an asterisk, so does OSU, Wisconsin and every other Big Ten team on their schedule.

This is mostly correct outside of Maryland to my knowledge. For the Maryland game, we saw their starter for a single series before he got hurt, and then it was their 3rd stringer the rest of the way.

Yeah, I think you’re right. In the recent PFF ranking, Josh Jackson is 127/130. Maryland s in a category with Rutgers and Northwestern. It doesn’t matter who plays QB. They all stink.

Andrew Marty stats - only 2 attempts with an interception and 0 completions. It is possible that neither starting QB will have completed a pass coming into this weeks game.

If Kramer starts the two QBs will have identical stat lines. If Clark starts our QB will have 100% of his passes completed compared to zero for the opposition.
