Look, everybody's overreacting a bit, methinks. We ran into a perfect storm. Is it still a game good teams should win? Absolutely. But here's what we can take away.

- I've never seen a better shooting performance than Virginia put on. Now, obviously, we can't leave it up to the other team missing, and our perimeter defense was pretty putrid throughout, but Virginia won't be shooting that well the rest of the year. They just happened to find a game in which they were hitting absolutely everything. Those games will happen. Seriously, I don't think they missed more than two or three open shots all game. Everything was going in for them.

- The Gophers had some near misses on shots that will normally go in. A lot of in and outs tonight, and a healthy dose of bad luck plagued the Gophers on the offensive end. When we did get the ball inside to the bigs, they missed layups and free throws. Again, that'll happen. When it happens the same night as the other team is apparently being inhabited by the spirit of Dolph Schayes, well, you've got a good chance of losing.

- We obviously really missed Nolen and Williams. They're our best perimeter defenders, in my opinion, and I think they would have really helped on the offensive end. Plus, Devoe was obviously rusty. He's been working on his shooting, which is good, but he could not see open players to save his life. He's just not a point guard. He needs to play shooting guard. Unfortunately, I'm still not that impressed with Maverick. He's obviously a natural point guard, and he doesn't make many mistakes, but he doesn't play good defense, and on the offensive end, he basically dribbles the ball up, and just passes the ball around the perimeter.

- Now, there are obviously some areas in which we need to improve. First, against a team like Virginia, we need to recognize that zone and the sagging defense won't work. This is a team that is exceptionally well coached, and can hit the three. Tubby needs to make sure the guys know that our help defense inside has been great, and that perimeter defenders should be playing up on their guys and fighting through screens. Also, we need to work on our offense, which has been a constant theme. When things start going against us, we need to force the ball inside, and be aggressive attacking the basket. We're obviously better in transition, and we had no opportunities in the second half to get out and run.

- Look, it was a bad loss, but these will happen. I expect that Virginia will turn into a respectable team by the end of the year, and that this won't look as bad at the end of the year as it does now. My hope is that Tubby runs these guys like crazy tomorrow to make them understand that this kind of effort was unacceptable, that Tubby drills them like crazy on free throws (the misses down the stretch were absolutely horrible, and were by some normally dependable shooters), and that our perimeter defensive effort improves. I don't think this will be the "beginning of the end," or anything like that. We'll be fine. We had a bad night. They had a ridiculously lucky night (although they are a well-coached team). It happens. We'll beat Cornell on Saturday, and move on from there.

I agree with this post. These losses happen and it really was a perfect storm. You can tell that people kind of get that because there isn't the typical meltdown we see on this board after a loss and the media isn't jumping all over the team saying stuff like, "came back to reality" etc.

THANK YOU for posting this.

The only thing I will add, is that it may not have been so much bad luck on those missed shots, but Blake, for one, had been playing about 38 minutes a game all season and there is no doubt he is exhausted. Devoe is obviously not in game shape (he hasn't played in any) Trevor has been logging huge minutes. When your legs are tired, easy shots tend to not go in as easily. But it happens to the best. Even superstar NBA players have nights like this. We just all need to keep a level head, and get our Belichek mindset ... "we are focussed on Cornell" and lets beat em by 20!

Virginia lost by 43....Yes that's FORTY-THREE....to Washington last week.

Unacceptable loss to a very bad and likely last place ACC team....

Virginia lost by 43....Yes that's FORTY-THREE....to Washington last week.

They also lost to an average Stanford team by 21 and to a mid-major Wichita St. by double digits.

Come tourney time when we are on the bubble, which we always are, this will count as a bad loss.

This is totally unacceptable...if you thought the Gophers were going to go 32-3 and win the Big Ten championship. But that was never going to happen.

If maybe they were always more of a 20-10 type team then, sure, these things happen.

who the eff is sunnyday? one loss and we are a twenty and 10 team. im sorry but i still see us losing only 1 NC game, the one we already lost btw, and maybe 5 or 6 conference games at the most to MSU, OSU, maybe Wis at kohl, or illinois, but we could very well beat MSU WIS, and ILL too. this is a good team, just terrible night, a perfect storm as the thread indicates. losing 2 starters, bringing in new PG, starting 2 freshman, team shooting 80% from 3 and from FT, getting over confident. i think we needed to lose a game. better now then in any other NC game to st. joes or SDSU. this will keep us level and hungry until B10 season rolls around

Thanks jmag. Sums up my thoughts perfectly. It's a long season, and we ran into a red hot team on a night when we didn't play well and were down a few important players. It happens.

Can you have it both ways? I bet a lot of UNC fans are saying the same thing about their loss to the Gophs. I mean, Harrison Barnes goes 0-12 or something like that from the field? He hits just 2 maybe 3 of those shots and the Gophers lose....

It is something to worry about

Siena came out shooting just as Virginia did. Luckily the gophers had enough to overcome it. Most times they wont. Their defense right now it unsatisfactory. Tubby needs to hold long difficult practices until this is resolved or butts must hit the pine.

I try to ignore you but it's damn near impossible. Don't recall anything from you after the football game Saturday, but a loss and you're right back with the constant negative crap. Maybe your mother left you on a doorstep soon after birth or maybe your wife ran off with the neighbor, but whatever it is, you sure seem like a miserable SOB.

and a Happy Holidays to you too! Stay classy

It's pretty easy to be an internet tough guy hiding behind your keyboard isn't it?

Oh, and I was right here all day Saturday m'boy. I'm ALWAYS here win or lose.

BTW, how much do you charge for rent for that space in your head I'm currently occupying?

Yes, it's a bad loss, but the tournament is many, many weeks away. I'd rather lose a bad one in November than February. This is not fatal to any post-season aspirations.

It wasn't fatigue so much as nerves. When the opposing team shoots the lights out, it puts extreme pressure on you offensively to do the same. When a few of your shots start missing but theirs continue to go in, nerves set in and the butterflies prevent the shot from going in.

One of the problems the Gophers may have had was actually the relatively long layover between games. Usually they play every 3 or 4 days, but IIRC they didn't play for about 6 days between NDSU and UVa.

Finally, there is little doubt that the Gophers got nervous when Virginia continued to hit their shots because...Virginia is not a good team, and they are not supposed to shoot like that...Minnesota is supposed to walk all over a team like UVa...especially at home...and it was the opener for the BT/ACC Challenge, and a "gimme" for the BT at that.

When teams shoot the lights out against us the pessimists blame the defense and the optomists blame a career shooting night. After watching Jackson have a career night and now this Virginia guy makes me think its more than bad luck our perimeter defense is bad. We should stop doubling the post until we can get better perimeter defense. Reality is the Hoff, Devoe, and Mav have slow lateral quickness but do try hard. Chip and Hollins appear to have great lateral quickness, athleticsm, and in Hollins case length to be good individual defenders. Hopefully they can embrace the role.

This really was a perfect storm. Slightly over-confident team. Young, inconsistant, but talented opponent who got very hot at the right time. Playing our 1st game without PG and 1st game with his replacement. Our second best perimeter defender playing at about 50%. All of the above added up to one really bad half of basketball. Change anyone of the things that come before it and we probably could have withstood one really bad half of basketball. Alas, we could not.

you sure seem like a miserable SOB

Sigh.

THIS is what is miserable.

Who the eff am I? A guy with an opinion. That's different from you how?

Mulligan, there's not much to figure out about Art "Badger" Vandelay.

He's Badger red as red can be. As I've said before, he used to be a regular poster on Badgernation.com many years ago, but now devotes himself full time here, mocking Minnesota fans, players and coaches at every opportunity. He's got quite the act going and he's quite dedicated to it, but other than that there's nothing to figure out.

Of course he denies it, he swears he's never been to a badger site and doesn't even know where they are, but what I've said is very much the truth. Once in a blue moon he'll even throw out a (mild) put down of Wisconsin as part of his act, but never anything serious. He saves all the good mocking for Minnesota.

So you decided to split your personalities, Art? Going with the sarcastic optimist as the alter-ego. Gee never could have figured that out. It's just more work for the rest of us to have to add another name to our ignore list. Spare us.

Mulligan's SOB comment was clearly directed at Art, there was no reason for sunnyday to respond to it. Either you're right or else sunnyday need help reading.
