The BTN now has deals for carriage on basic tiers with Cablevision, Time Warner, and Comcast (the 3 major cable carriers in the NYC/NJ market). The NJ.com RU reporter also tweeted that the BTN has similar deals done with the major cable companies in the MD/DC/VA footprint. To the doubters who thought that it would be a knock down, drag out, protracted fight to get BTN onto their basic carriage tiers (especially in the NYC/NJ market) looks like they were wrong.....way wrong.

With NYC/NJ and MD/DC/VA footprint all locked in, "ring that register" when the next B1G Tier 1 TV contract bidding/negotiations come around. $$$$$

This is beyond great news. If college football is going to be an arms race with regard to ammenities or facilities (or if players become compensated employees) it's nice to know the B1G will be best positioned to compete.

Hey Marooned - who do you think ultimately pays for these big TV contracts? I do - you do - everyone who subscribes to Cable TV or a Satellite service does. Because, every time the cable and dish providers shell out big bucks to carry a channel like BTN or Fox Sports North, they turn around and raise the rates they charge to their subscribers.

I know a guy who runs a municipal cable t-v system, and he says the programmers are coming in and asking for huge increases every year. that leaves the cable system with two choices - lose money, or raise their rates. Gee, what do you think they'll choose?

Now, if you're a hard-core sports fan, you might not mind paying $5, $6, or more a month for BTN or FSN, but you're also paying more for all those channels you don't watch, and the overall bill just keeps going up. And for people like me, who don't live in a metro area, and don't have the option of over-the-air TV, that cable bill is getting a lot harder to swallow.

Cable and satellite companies will eventually have anti-trust issues with the way they package their product.

Cable TV is going the of the Dodo bird. I watch all my sports online and don't pay for anything.

I suspect my Comcast Sports Pack subscription will go up significantly with the addition of the SEC Network later this summer.
