My post on the 2010 schedule got me thinking about this, as well as a post from StartGrayPlz. I think Penn State is ripe for an upset next year. They lose Bowmann and Lee on defense, and Clark on offense. Not sure what other key players they will be missing, but that hurts (granted, they always seem to have a pipeline of blue chip LB's).

Here are PSU's results from their schedule this year:

Akron W 31-7 --
Sat, Sep 12 Syracuse W 28-7 --
Sat, Sep 19 Temple W 31-6 --
Sat, Sep 26 Iowa L 10-21 --
Sat, Oct 3 at Illinois W 35-17 --
Sat, Oct 10 Eastern Illinois W 52-3 --
Sat, Oct 17 Minnesota W 20-0 --
Sat, Oct 24 at Michigan W 35-10 --
Sat, Oct 31 at Northwestern W 34-13 --
Sat, Nov 7 (15) Ohio State L 7-24 --
Sat, Nov 14 Indiana W 31-20 --
Sat, Nov 21 at Michigan StateW 42-14 --

Losses to OSU and Iowa. Who is their signature win? I think we may be their signature win. That's not saying much about their program. And they managed to be ranked 11th in the nation?

If we were given that schedule I think we would have ended up with very similar results:
1. We both lost to Iowa/OSU

2. We beat Syracuse AT Syracuse

3. AFA and Cal are both better than Temple/Illinois,

4. We played Purdue and Wisconsin while they played Indiana and Michigan. Wisconsin had a solid season and was ranked, while Purdue hung tough in a lot of games and beat OSU.

5. One of the only differences is they won many of their games in convincing fashion. I'm not of the camp that says "a win is a win" because of the crap Brew has taken for "beating" SDSU...but I think PSU may be a tad overrated and ripe for a loss next year at the Bank. I hope I'm right!

I think they're overall team strength actually goes up. But anytime you've got to replace a key player problems can result. Problem with PSU is that their strength really is their D. I'm pretty sure they'll be the same ole on that side of the ball.

Interestingly, they played in zero games where the game was decided by ten points or fewer. They are undoubtedly a superior team, though we could have feasibly won ten games on that schedule. We probably would've been closer to 9-3 (Illinois) or 8-4 (I can see us losing to Michigan... again.)
