Actual Penn State football remains a secondary topic at the 2016 Big Ten Media Days.

Recruits are being told a false narrative by rival recruiters that the program will be put on probation by the NCAA, athletic director Sandy Barbour shared with reporters on Tuesday.

"That's flat-out untrue," Barbour said. "The NCAA is very pleased with how we've handled this. We have done everything they asked us to do."

The school never faced a formal NCAA investigation in the Sandusky scandal. For the first time in its history, on such a massive scale, the NCAA hit Penn State with crippling penalties four years ago this month. The NCAA cited institutional control and a violation of the NCAA constitution.

Many said the NCAA acted outside its jurisdiction in penalizing the program.

It's been one-and-a-half years since the NCAA rescinded the last of those penalties. But coach James Franklin continues to complain about negative recruiting. Barbour articulated what some of that alleged negative recruiting is about.

"That's absolutely what is being said, that Penn State is going to be put on probation ... ," Barbour said. "It's one thing to take facts and skew them a little bit; it's another not to be factual."

"I would hope particularly within our own conference that we would be honorable," she added.

The Reading Eagle reported last month that Franklin said Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State were using the Sandusky scandal as "recruiting tool" against Penn State.

Hey, covering up 20 years of child rape is no biggie but god forbid it affect your recruiting.

These Penn state people remain the most tone deaf mf's around.

PSU is currently 6th in the B1G on the composite with 12 commits and haven't finished lower than 4th the four previous years. I'm not feeling too sorry for them. It's possible they are getting pretty butt hurt that their closest conference rival and perennial doormat Rutgers is beating them in the recruiting war so far.

Hey, that's what happens when you hire a guy like James Franklin. Don't get all whiny Sandy, Penn St could of hired someone else. Franklin is a whiny little bitch and I hope we kick their ass this year. You don't think schools used Coach Kills situation against MN? That's why Penn St will NEVER compete against the top dogs with a guy like Franklin at the helm. F U Penn State. Can't believe the cry baby their coach is.

That's pretty much how I view Franklin as well. He is a tool.

Well, since the penalties should have lasted for just as many years as Sandusky was at PSU, the staff at Pedophilia State are getting off easy. Shut up.

If I was a coach from another school, I would simply hand photos of victims to every recruit's parents along with a picture of Sandusky. Then I would say "I wouldn't worry about your son going to PSU, though. He's too old."

Regardless of what you think about Penn State, negative recruiting is a fact of life in college sports. I have no doubt that some teams are more up-front about it than others. But, I see a difference between bringing up the Sandusky scandal - and flat out lying to recruits that "School X is going to be put on probation." There's nothing wrong with painting your opponents in a negative light, but don't lie to recruits. If I was a head coach, and I found out my recruiters were lying to recruits, I would not be happy. If you can't sell the positive aspects of your school without lying to recruits, then you're not a very effective recruiter.

In general, I still think people respond better to a positive argument than to a negative argument. "This is why you should come to our school" as opposed to "this is why you shouldn't go to the other school."

I didn't think there were any reasons left for hating Penn State. I was wrong.

I miss the good old days when parents and coaches were paid in cash and gifts.

This is perfect.

Don't believe everything you read. I guarantee you the situation isn't as laid out by JF/PSU.

I wonder if any of this is coming from Franklin and Co. Franklin always seemed like a kinda weaselly used car salesman. Now granted that works in CFB, but maybe someone is trying to setup an excuse for them....

+1

I can definitely sympathize with them if this is going on and I don't get the hate for Franklin.

Well...it did happen, and seems like what we know is just the tip of the iceberg for PSU. Deal with it.

The addition Maryland & Rutgers into the B1G, and the rise of Michigan & MSU may make it a little more interesting as far as recruiting goes for Penn State in the Rust Belt/Eastern Seaboard recruiting bed.

However, if you look at their recruiting ranking since 2000 they have never been ranked higher than 5th (2000) and lower 48 (2003) recruiting-wise (247Sports):

2017 23 to date
2016 20
2015 15
2014 24
2013 33
2012 46
2011 31
2010 12
2009 18
2008 37
2007 35
2006 35
2005 23
2004 13
2003 48
2003 22
2001 17
2000 5

They may be feeling more pressure now and are crying foul.

Despite the firing of Joe Paterno and Jerry Sandusky forever marring the "Success With Honor" image, on average Penn State has never matched tOSU, Alabama, or LSU's recruiting prowess.

The Gophers have had negative recruiting against them over the years. It is what it is. This is college football.
