Dang, they aren't having that bad of a season... I guess everyone seemed to hate him though.

If Northwestern doesn't beat MSU this Saturday, does Fitzgerald's seat start to warm up? If they lost that game, they are needing a win in their last game to salvage a single conference win, go 1-7, and miss a bowl game, all in a season where they were ranked top-20 and projected to compete for the B1G title (or at least compete for the privilege of winning our division before getting steamrolled by OSU). One the one hand, they have been competitive in a lot of games, on the other, he has shown a Mason-esque way of losing games in situations where they should not be losing. I am sure he will get another season, but if next year is more like this season and less like last season, I think Fitz freally might start to feel the heat.

No.

Doesn't Jim Tressel have like a five-year show-cause penalty from Tattoogate?

Yes, which tells you all you need to know about this 'report' at this time. Also, everytime a major college football opening appears Chris Peterson is always predicted to be one of the replacements. How many times has he told a major program thanks but no thanks?

I nominate Brewster.

The Pelini thing would not surprise me. They are nuts about football out there, and I get the impression he is not all that popular with the fan base. I thought he was in trouble after they lost to us a few weeks ago.

As for Fitzgerald he would have to string together a bunch of really bad seasons in a row before his seat would warm up. I get the impression the fans and administration love him and for good reason as he has been pretty successful at a tough place to compete given their higher academic standards. He is a Northwestern guy and it would take a scandal or something along those lines to get him out of there.

Who is this Stephen Augustyn?

Fitz can stay at NW as long as he wants. The NW administration does not care about wins or loses. They care about grade points and character. Fitz is giving them both. Plus he seems like a nice guy.

I am not shocked by this at all. Nebraska wants to get back to the Osborne days and winning conference titles and Pelini is just not doing it. He has alienated his fan base, his defense is not Blackshirt standards and they have not won a conference title since 1999. Dr. Tom is no longer in Lincoln to protect him and with a new AD in Einhorst, they are going to want to go in a new direction. They are going to come out with a big offer on someone.

My good friends who are money boosters are pushing hard for a big offer on Fitzgerald, but I just don't see him leaving Evanston. I can see them going after Al Golden since Einhorst came from Miami. I was shocked when Golden did not take the job at Wisconsin last season and with the NCAA issues that have been hanging over Miami for years, I wonder if he would pull the trigger and go to Lincoln.

You look back at Nebraska and they have not been known for spending big money after coaches, but there is serious money in Nebraska to bring in a name and pay for it. Hell, Devaney came from Wyoming, Osborne was an assistant for Devaney, Solich was an assistant of Osborne, and Pelini came from LSU as an asst. This would be a new trend for UNL, but I can see them do it.

Nebraska will not go after Tressel with the show cause which is not up till December 2016 and Peterson will not leave Boise State after the failures of Hawkins and Koetter leaving Boise.

I've been predicting Pelini's demise ever since Osborne's departure. I think Pelini is a very good football coach (great resume), but if his sideline demeanor is any indication of what his private behavior is, the guy simply has to have someone to run interference for him when confronting the Nebraska administration and booster/fan structure. That was Dr. Tom. Without Dr. Tom around to provide assurance to those entities, I figured the unvarnished Pelini would have trouble navigating successfully.

PS--Fitzgerald is at NW for as long as he wants. My guess is the only way he'll leave is if he gets the itch to see what he could accomplish at a big-time sports-centric university. He's a real competitor, so I wouldn't rule it out, but my guess is they'll be naming buildings after the guy if he stays at NW for the rest of his career. As for the on-field product, Stanford's entrance requirements likely equal Northwestern's, so I'm not buying the "kids can't get in" argument for NW. I think Fitzgerald needs to get away from his touch-football offense.

The show cause penalty would make hiring Jim Tressel a very difficult prospect. It's not as though he has a year to go either. The five year period doesn't expire until 12/17/16.

Chris Petersen has said no to major programs before, but that was when Boise State was at its peak. Let's face it. Boise State is what it is by having 11-1 seasons and then complaining, amidst massive national media attention and debate, that it's being unfairly denied a seat at the BCS table. Even though the Broncos had an 11-2 season in 2012, I think it could be argued that they were already starting to become old news by then. This year they're 7-3 (5-1) to date and have fallen further off the national radar. If Boise State has a few 9-3 and 8-4 seasons, they will quickly become just another team. Boise State is also well past the point when a power conference school will overlook it as an opponent on the field or in recruiting. As this managed decline sets in, Petersen could even face local fan and media backlash. If ever there was a time for Chris Petersen to make the leap, it's now. His career options will go from the likes of Nebraska or USC to the likes of Utah or Illinois if he waits too long.

My guess: This is just some random dude who is taking a well-known piece of data (that there is a fairly decent chance Pelini is gone after this year) and capitalizing. If it pans out, whether he had a source or was completely making it up, he'll get a ton of credit

Maybe it's Gophergod (Gee Gee)? Though he's been telling us for years that they only reason the Huskers have lost any games since 2004 is because of Callahan and Cosgrove. Pellini was going to lead them back to Championship after Championship. His forecasting ability was as flawed as his backbone.

Nobody signs "resignation papers" with contract time left. Nobody.

Wacker did.

Whether this is true or not, the fact it is so believable is kind of sad when you look at the record NE has. This "we must be in the championship game every year or it's a failure" mentality is just unbelievable. The Gophers would have loved his level of "failure" over the last few years...

Nebraska keeps running coaches with 9 win season off is to the advantage of schools like MN. They will go in a bad direction and kill any mystique they have left. MN is learning to be competitive you have to look at schools like IA and WI who keep continuity. Nebraska is killing it past history by running coaches off.

This. The Pelini situation reminds me a lot of the Solich firing, which went really well for them obviously.

It's quite possible. If someone's rumor pans out, then they look like they had insider info. If not, then it's forgotten. Without knowing whether or not a poster has insider information, or knowing who their sources are, the rumors aren't worth much. It's very possible that he will be fired, but predicting it correctly doesn't prove insider knowledge. Even when they do have information, we don't know the quality of the information - it is first-hand, second-hand or third-hand? Information often is distorted in the telling. I take these things for entertainment value only.

like when we fired Tubby and Mason? Pelini has lost 4 games every single season he has been at NU i believe, he hasn't had any terrible teams but he hasn't had any great teams either, every single team has been middle of the road for nebraska standards at least, he also hasn't shown any progress, that is how we felt when we fired both of those guys i mentioned, we had solid teams under those coaches every year but we never went up and beyond, we eventually plateaued/peaked and once that happens then i think it is time for a change, a breath of fresh air, Nebraska is expected to compete and win Conference and National championships, i don't blame them for wanting someone else, also i would like to see how Kirby Smart would do, maybe the new Dantonio in the conference

And what if they end up at #2 in the legends division? I have a hard time believing this right now.

Who would be upset enough? No one in Illinois, Chicago, or not even on campus cares. Maybe the 8 people that show up regularly for games might.

Absolutely ridiculous comparison. Tubby was at Minnesota for 6 years and never finished above .500 in his own conference. Glen Mason was at Minnesota for 10 years, went 32-48 in conference and had a terrible record against rival schools. 4 of Pelini's 5 years at the helm of Nebraska have ended with a division championship and he still has an outside chance at making it 5 of 6 years. The landscape of college football has changed and to expect Nebraska to be a national power is unrealistic. They have been in the B1G for half of Pelini's tenure which means that Nebraska is dealing with some tougher enrollment standards for football players than they had in the past as well. Nebraska can do what they want, and I don't care if they push Pelini out the door, but they're not going to be competing for National Championships very often in the new landscape of college football.

Just texted a family member who works at Nebraska in an admin job. Big Nebraska fan obviously. They haven't heard anything about Pelini signing paperwork to be done. Although there are some that want him gone nothing is for sure yet. This person also said that Pelini is not a big fan of the Lincoln area and their words were "pretty sure he hates it here."

Sports radio down here in Kansas City hasn't been talking about this at all. I'm also under the brief that at this time this is a false rumor.

But what do I know.

I think you know plenty and pretty much have it nailed. One thing is certain, there is currently as much talk about this situation here as on the boards in nebraska. But who knows?
