Per Paul Harvey:

Minnesota

Minnesota didn’t lose any QBs to the portal to start the offseason, but the Gophers must still replace 1-year starter Max Brosmer. Drake Lindsey, a true freshman backup to Brosmer, appeared in 3 games but attempted just 5 passes.

The Gophers added Zach Pyron out of Georgia Tech, a former 4-star recruit from the 2022 recruiting class. Pyron appeared in 19 career games for the Yellow Jackets but completed just 56.8% of his passes in limited action.

It should be a true QB battle throughout the offseason, and if a viable option surfaces in the portal, expect PJ Fleck and his staff to kick the tires.

Go Gophers!!

I'm sure it is a competition.

I do think sometimes fans react oddly if they don't "hear" about a lot of competition assume the coaches just didn't "have" a competition.

No matter what coaches do / guys they bring in, sometimes I think they stand around in practice and they just know "naw it's gonna be that guy" and it's not because they picked their favorite or refused to have a competition, it just started and ended fast.

I think it's likely both end up playing. Even if Lindsey wins the job, I think they'll have some wildcat type packages for Pyron.

Best case scenario for the team is that Drake is ready, seizes the opportunity and is the no doubt starter heading into the season.

But yeah, it's definitely an open competition and whoever the coaches feel gives them the best chance to win games will be the guy taking the snaps.

Some fans love to make the assumption that the coaches pick the starters for some other reason then the player they feel is the best option but a coach would have to be a complete moron not to play their best option, especially at the QB position. I think where fans get confused sometimes is with the concept that best option doesn't always mean most talented. The two usually overlap but they don't have to. For example, Kaliakmanis probably had a better arm than Tanner Morgan but Morgan was 100% the better QB of the two.

Spring will be wide open. They have to see how Lindsey responds to competition and what they truly have at QB. I tend to think we will see a lot of the two QB's during the season.

I hope Lindsey wins the job, because I think Pyron might be sneaky good so that would mean Lindsey would have to be even better.
