Paterno on Eric Decker

re Minny sack problems...

...I will be surprised if Brew/JF/TD don't continue more of what we saw vs Purdue to deal with the OL propensity to give-up sacks: designed, "moving pockets" and rollout pkgs for Weber with a running option; rollout/option pkgs for Gray; TE/TB screens; Gray wildcat with pass option more active, esp on the run; Weber given the green-light to run and slide (Joey E/Purdue qb was quite good at that last week) when he sees meaningful daylight; selective draw action with multiple TBs and of course, other surprises for the biggies that haven't been unveiled as yet.

The Gs are developing a talented, diversified offense along JF's pro-style lines...they have played and won two tough games on the road against meaningful opponents..this won't be another easy "no problem" cupcake for Joe Pa & Cos D...Deck may be his main concern, but there are other GG offensive weapons this year that can do a lot of damage with continued disciplined, focused execution.

In the last couple of games I feel like our identity is developing to be a screen type team. We have been willing to run a screen on any down and at any point on the field. I'd be surprised if we have less then 5 screens called this game also. Our TE middle screen has been very effective.

Agreed...screens very effective

against aggressive D's looking for any easy sack. Calling them at any point on the field...except inside the deep RZn...can give an aggressive D fits and I agree it will on Saturday!

Is meaningful another word for bad?

"full of meaning, significance, purpose, or value"

There was certainly "purpose" and "value" in wins against Syracuse and Northwestern.

Can we assume that you don't teach English?:drink:

Good screening teams love this call in the redzone. You generally can get 5-10 yards on a screen just dodging fat people :). In addition our fat people don't have to chase people down field since they don't bail as far. Eliminate the D-line send your fat guys into the LB/Secondary and score.

I think Purdue loved the flanker screen in the redzone, if I remember correctly.

re "meaningful"...

for me it means "non-cupcake opponent" road wins compared to W's both at home and away during the first half of the season in previous painful years for GN.

I was being glib.

Beating the same awful Syracuse team that Penn St. drubbed by 3 touchdowns is hardly what I would call preparation. Ditto Northwestern. It seems like people doth protest too much concerning Penn State and Ohio State. Yes, Penn State has yet to beat a quality opponent, but neither have we. I don't see why we need to tear them down to artificially build ourselves up. Anything can happen, so I have hope and will be cheering us on, but Penn State is a really good football team, the likes of which we haven't beaten in many years.

"I was being glib.

Yeah, I kind of caught that...;)

I'm not seeing where anybody is tearing down Penn State and it's hard to fathom if they did.

The major point of overlooked optimism for me comes from the Purdue game. Even though they did drop two potential interceptions they held on to two others. The Syracuse game you mentioned wouldn't have been close if they didn't drop what, three interceptions. The Cal game would have been a win if they could have held onto a couple more.

Yeah, I know, if, maybe, could have etc., etc. etc. 4-2 is where they are.

The Gophers are still creating fumbles but what got them off to their 7-1 start last year was that plus holding on to interceptions ( and not giving turnovers OUT!). It doesn't make me want to drop $100 on Minnesota just yet, but last Saturday's game does make me feel a little better. :)

With all due respect to Gopherprof...

PSU defeating Syracuse by 28-7 was not a "drubbing" IMHO...that was a solid win...PSU gashing Eastern Illinois 52-3 last week was a serious "drubbing", Iowa 55-0 last year vs the GGs was a depressing "drubbing" for GN.

Having been at the Minny/Syracuse game and having some understanding of what they are trying to do in their rebuilding program with a first year coach, I make the following observations: PSU was playing their second game, had a huge crowd, home field advantage and had the opportunity to thoroughly study the Minny/Cuse game tape...Joe Pa & Co are excellent at that given their years of coaching experience...and plan accordingly. Given all that edge, I was actually surprised that with all the PSU pre-season hype out here, they didn't put up more points on the Orange.

BTW, Cuse played three BT teams in NC and won one of those - @home vs NW. Based on their fan base, their recognition as the only real Empire State football power, their big following in the huge NY/NJ-metro media area, their recuiting base of NY/PA/OH, their big regional rivalry with PSU, I believe they would make a great additiion to the BT by opening up the huge Eastern market in a big way and paving the way for a BT 6-team East/West division setup and title game showdown late in November or early December. Wow! Since I live within three hours of Syracuse, I would be at the Dome regularly to see Minny and other BT opponents and so would lots of other BT alum here in the East.
