In typical Reusse fashion it takes him eight paragraphs to get to the modern day and a few additional paragraphs to get to his thesis. Per Reusse:

Teague has reason to be very nervous about the future of Gophers basketball. With today’s Tubby, tomorrow very well could put the Gophers perennially in the same tier as Northwestern, Penn State and perhaps Rutgers ... fighting for 11th through 14th in the Big Ten.

Go Gophers!!

Ya gotta admit, Reusse does know how and when to stir the chilli.

It looks to me as though our new norwood model AD has extended himself into a corner. The ONLY things he has to worry about in March of 2013 would be whether to BUY OUT a contract he just renewed...OR...to fully, and completely stand by his man when the ink is barely even dry on his man's newly extended contract. IF he buys Tubby out, he will face much risk in terms of hiring a new coach...AND looking very bad for having so recently extended the coach he would now be buying out.

OR, perhaps even MORE dangerous for our new norwood, he would have to be rock-solid in his commitment to his newly extended coach.

Coach Smith as a B1G Coach is what Coach Smith's B1G record says he is. No more. No less. It wasn't so much different this year than it was last year...yet, our new norwood made the extension. He will stand alone as the most easily disliked man at the University of Minnesota pretty much no matter what he says or does.

I'd say it is up to Tubby and to Tubby's players to decide how this one will turn out. It may be a case where our new norwood "...extended when he should have pretended he needed more time to decide to extend...or not to extend: That should have been the question..." Our new norwood, IF he was the person who called the shot on the extension, may be a very lonely new norwood unless the Coach he befriended as he extended and that Coaches players play a heck of a game against UCLA and then find a way to beg, borrow or steal a win most likely against a very good Florida team.

This is really some predicament our new norwood appears to have gotten himself into. Of course, IF he was instructed to extend...then buy out the contract of his newly extended Tubby, he may have just earned himself a very nice consulting job from his boss if and when he has completed his stint as that AD in Gopherville. But THAT is why our new norwood gets paid the really big compensation package...and gets his name in the papers so often...

Pat Reusse column: Teague should be nervous about caliber of Big Ten coaches

I will never click on another Reusse column, so I don't really care what he writes. Maybe Fatty should spend more time worrying about the caliber of sports news I can acquire outside of his columns/radio schtick.

Pat does a nice job of aggregating a number of posts from the Gopherhole into one fairly coherent column. How much does the site get from the Strib for this service?

Why do people insist on continuing to post Reusse garbage in Gopherhole? C'mon Bleed!

I like the way Bleed plays it. Most of the time it's a cut and paste of pertinent parts so we experience the schadenfreude of reading it's essential properties without rewarding Fatty with a click.

I don't think Teague will be blamed for the extension. It was my understanding that he put into writing an agreement that Maturi basically made on the why out the door after dragging his feet. If that's the case, I don't want to fault Woody for living up to a commitment made by his office prior to inheriting it.

I always try to figure out just who is responsible for what in Gopher Football and Basketball. Thanks for your response. It would appear that you place the responsibility for this extension on the former athletic director who is currently being paid very handsomely for what ever his official "unofficial" title currently is.
How many coaches has he "unofficially" officially extended on his way out the door? Is he responsible...or...would prexy k be responsible, because prexy k has been in charge of everything since before the former athletic director became the former athletic director currently on the payroll for what ever it is he does in his "unofficial" capacity. Or, is prexy k merely following orders that prexy b left on his way out the door from the prexy's office as he transitioned into his new office that sounds like some sort of "think tank organization" that he set aside funds to create while he was still the acting prexy at the U?

It just seems to me as though the administration at the U has set up a scam in which NO ONE in administration is EVER held accountable for anything.

It would seem to me that Tubby Smith is NOT the person responsible for this latest extension that makes the buy out cost so much more expensive SHOULD our new norwood FINALLY take responsibility...take charge and take control of the office of the athletics director of the University of Minnesota and totally back Tubby or buy Tubby out and hire a new coach.

Just when does our new norwood's responsibility for the position he holds take effect?

Or, is our new norwood merely a fall-guy for our somewhat new prexy's moves in the athletic department? Perhaps prexy k hasn't been in charge long enough to be accountable either...Is anyone ever there long enough to be held accountable in the administration at the U?

It also seems to me that old administrators and prexys at the U NEVER really go away: they just transition into new offices and unofficial, but still highly paid positions that have no accountability...but, perhaps still do have a LOT of impact on what happens and what does not happen within the athletic department at the U...

I wish the Strib could make Reusse nervous by threatening to bring in a stronger, more analytical columnist.

And the always classic "take that Reusse" response on GHole.

Wait, does that mean Joel Maturi has already left for China?

Don't they only ship former ad's "on retainer" to distant lands when the press is asking for a comment on recent "surprise" extensions of contracts that are much better left "unexplained..."

It is much safer to have the "resident fall-guy" on retainer and out of the country once the stories of the newly extended coaches start surfacing many months after the fact. That is all part of the strategy involved in this "pass the buck...I'm ONLY the new guy...I haven't been here long enough to be blamed yet..." game the administration at the U plays...

Yep, and they will continue to read his columns and respond. Reusse always gets the final laugh because as much as people here rip him, the majority still read his stuff or at least click on it or talk about. He has essentially made those on gopherhole that he infuriates his bitch because they give him free advertising.
