Pat Fitzgerald, who will coach Northwestern against the Gophers on Saturday, sang the praises of coach Jerry Kill at Fitzgerald’s weekly news conference after upsetting Wisconsin.

“Jerry Kill’s personality is all over this football team,” Fitzgerald said. “They’re tough, they’re physical, they play very well-coached, very disciplined football in all three phases. You couple that with having to go on the road again, it’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Adding more on Kill, Fitzgerald said: “I mean, he’s a war daddy, a guy that beats cancer, the challenges he has with epilepsy, and he embraces it. That’s Jerry. We have known each other for a long time. He and his staff are terrific, they’re tremendous. The kids at Minnesota, Northern [Illinois], every stop he has been at, he’s one of the best in our business.

“If he’s not [the best], he’s in the top 10. His [assistants] have a blueprint on the young men they recruit, on how they coach them, they have a blueprint on how they do things schematically and it shows up on tape. The credit starts at the top with his leadership and just who he is.”

"Fitzgerald also sang the praises of Gophers offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover’s play-calling. The Wildcats coach remembered Limegrover as a graduate assistant at Northwestern in 1995 and 1996.
“Big up front, big offensive line, big backs, bigger running backs than we saw a week ago, they’re going to pound it,” Fitzgerald said. “A little bit more gap-schemes, at least what they’ve shown earlier, a little bit more quarterback runs, similar to Northern Illinois. Our defensive staff is going to have their hands full, and … they had a bye. We’ll be adjusting quite a bit. They do a lot of formation variations. But their defense is fast and physical, do a great job playing man, and their special teams may be the best that we’ve seen.”

Again, I will just say:

Clearly he isn't a poster on GH!

Or maybe he's just really happy that Limegrover's tendency toward simpleton playcalling makes his defensive gameplanning that much easier.

I love comments like this. Clearly, you have grounds to call someone a "simpleton" when he gets paid upwards of a half-million dollars per year because his rare level of expertise is that much in demand. How much are you paid for your expertise? If he's a "simpleton", what does that make you?

This reminds me of a funny line from Parks and Rec:

You do understand the difference between the phrase "tendency toward simpleton playcalling" and calling someone a "simpleton", right? Reading comprehension clearly is not your strong suit.

And which did you mean? After seeing your posts on the topic I think I know.

Do you purposely or just merely coincidentally avoid the numerous times when I praise Limegrover's gameplan, including when I call it genius?

When he calls a vanilla game in preseason that turns a sure blowout into a nailbiter in which the offense is outgained by the opposition and the game's outcome isn't sealed until the 4th quarter, I'm going to criticize that gameplan. And when he sticks to a simplistic, failing gameplan in which the offense does not and cannot move the ball in B1G play, I'm going to criticize that gameplan. When he avoids his tendency to oversimplify things, the guy can call a great game; and in those cases I give him his deserved credit. Unfortunately, in Limegrover's history with the Gophers, the former is frequent.

It's a distinction without a difference. I'm sure you wouldn't mind it if I said that you post like a moron. After all, I'm not calling you a moron.

Your reputation as the Village Idiot on GH is well deserved. Disapproval from you is a compliment.

Ha, that's funny. You are the first person on this board, ever, to refer to me as the "Village Idiot", so apparently this "reputation" exists in your own mind.

Disapproval from you is a compliment.

I look forward to periodic updates from you as to how your football coaching career is progressing. Let us know when people are paying you $550 k per year for your expertise. I know it burns you that a simpleton is making a salary several factors larger than yours.

Go Gophers!!

Fitzgerald is the king of saying nice things about the opponent and opposing staff. Barrerio does a bit on Kfan about Fitzgerald's ability to praise anyone going back to when he had great things to say about Brewster. Not saying he doesn't believe the things he is saying but he is the master at making comments like the ones above about pretty much anything and anyone.

In other words - if the offense has a good game, it was a good game plan. If the offense has a bad game, it was a bad game plan. A wonderful approach - which completely eliminates those pesky little details like; execution by the offensive players (you know, those guys with the helmets and uniforms) - and whatever the defense is doing. (you know, those guys with the different colored uniforms). Apparently, the other team has no impact on the game - it is entirely decided by the offensive coordinator.

If one chose, one could call your take a "simpleton analysis" - but I am not calling you a simpleton.

There are days I seriously question whether some people on this board really understand anything about football.

Um, no, not anywhere near that simplistic. But you know that, if you're reading this board. May I suggest you consult one of the many threads on GH on this topic, if you actually care to delve into the details instead of apply binary logic to a non-binary topic.

Spot on. Even someone with simpleton tendencies can see that.

I'm not sure if this would be considered "nice", but I laughed at it

I hesitate to get in the middle of an entertaining argument, but point spreads don't really matter. Winning is what it's about. If JK's style for the kind of team he's built is 'vanilla,' seems like practicing that style in the "preseason" would make sense. Fine tune the style you're going to play once the "regular season" games start. I see this team developing and improving each week, probably with each practice.

Does Fitz know we have a nutritionist to decide the menu?
