Minnesota has lost 37 straight road games against Top 25 foes since a 55-54 win over then-No. 24 Michigan on Feb. 26, 1997.

That win clinched the 1997 BT title.

When was the last top 25 road win before that? Anyone?

On top of that, the last time we beat a Top 10 foe on the road (MSU is #8 tonight) was 1981! It was at Iowa in a building they don't even play in anymore.

Here's another note: The Gophers have only one "true" road win over a NCAA tourney team in the last 12 years -- Wisconsin last year.

Those are awful numbers. I always thought Clem's teams could be anybody in the country at home, but could lose to almost anybody on the road. Under Tubby, we look better on the road now than we used to, but we aren't quite as dominant at home yet.

You have to remember Clem was always about winning at home. He never stressed road wins and consequentially he didn't get a whole lot of them.
Then along came Monson and he never had the talent to beat anybody of note on the road.

Yes it's been a long time but this is the first year in many many years that we have the horses to actually beat a top 25 team on the road.

Maybe even tonight!

Gophs vs. NCAA qualifiers (road/neutral) circa 1/1/2000

There certainly has been progress in this area since Tubby took over. Gophers didn't have a single road/neutral win over a NCAA qualifier (using Jan. 1, 2000 as a starting point) until they beat Indiana in Indianapolis. Last season we added two more (Louisville and Wisconsin). This season it's safe to say we've added another one (Butler). Hopefully there's another NCAA-quality scalp or two earned away from The Barn this season.

Entering 2009-10 Season
Overall Record vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Road: 1-48 (.0020)
Dan Monson vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Road: 0-39 (.0000)
Tubby Smith vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Road: 1-9 (.1000)

Overall Record vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Neutral: 2-12 (.1428)
Dan Monson vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Neutral: 0-10 (.0000)
Tubby Smith vs. NCAA Qualifiers/Neutral: 2-2 (.5000)

Some of these "stats" are likely skewed. This 12 years covers the timeframe that was "erased" so of course there are no wins over ANY teams for the 6 years in there. Of course, it also covers 9 years of Monson. I don't don't know for sure but I would guess that the Voshon Lenard and bobby Jackson teams render some of these stats incorrect but we don't know because those scores are erased.

Correct me if you are taking those year into account. But really all this is really saying is we cheated and Monson sucked. We already knew that.

The game against Michigan that we won in '97 should've been erased too, so I guess you can go back even further since we've won a game on the road versus a ranked team.

Gophers away from home vs. NCAA qualifiers (last 12 seasons)

True Road Game: February 15, 1997 (Gophers 68, @ Iowa 66)
Neutral-Site Game: March 6, 1998 (Gophers 76, Michigan State 73 @ BTT in Chicago)

Totals Last 12 Seasons vs. NCAA Qualifiers Away from Home
Overall: 4-74
Road: 1-59
Neutral: 3-15

The thing that stands out to me? The 1998-99 and 2004-05 seasons prove there are occasions when a team can earn an at-large bid without really beating anyone away from the friendly confines of their home court.

Not that there is room to go much lower, but I'd bet that 1-59 on the road vs. NCAA teams in the last 12 years has to be the worst record for any BCS-conference team.

I guess my point is that most teams even pull a couple of upsets here and there. It's stunning we haven't done so.

NW won two such games just last season alone! They also beat us at Williams in 04-05. That's one of the worst BCS conference teams just off the top of my head - and they've already tripled our win total.

Between football and basketball in the last decade the severity of futility on the road against halfway decent opponents is beyond alarming.

Maybe someone can answer me this, (This one is always painful to me) when was the last time the Gophers placed someone on an All America team?

Bobby Jackson, I'm fairly certain. I don't think Lewis or Humphries made an AA team.

To me this is the painful stat for this year

Not to diminish the pain of a very long drought in quality road wins, but this pain is more immediate. Not a single Gopher in the top fifteen in FT % in conference Big Ten play.
