"It's been a strange few months for the Michigan State football team and head coach Mark Dantonio. In addition to coming off a shocking 3-9 campaign last season, the Spartans have been in the midst of an ongoing sexual assault investigation that has involved several players on the team and a support staffer.

"Per MLive.com, a whopping 15 players of the football team did not participate in the event and at least 10 were limited to the sidelines in sweatshirts. Perhaps most prominent of the names was that of tailback LJ Scott, a likely starter who has contributed significantly in the backfield.

All of the players were listed on the roster handed out to the media before the game, prompting the question as to why they weren’t involved."

Yay. The Gophers are not the only program in D1 FB with issues! Misery loves company.

At least MSU being consistent with their communication, they are not listing names of who is not participating, or who is suspended. On the other hand, Coyle violated state privacy by announcing players were suspended. Hopefully he has learned from this simply to be consistent. Had he not announced they were suspended, when the reason came out it would have been easy to say - can't comment. Also, players reps may not as been as quick to release because no one would have, like MSU, known who was out for injuries or other reasons.

They just can't help themselves. The reporters had to have the guys hanging from the yardarm, hell or high water despite Dantonio's efforts and the school's efforts to protect their identities until the case is settled. Who was it that labeled them jackals? Appropriate.

"As media reported the names, the Twitter machine blew up. That also was predictable.

It all grew out of Michigan State's prior decisions not to identify the players who are suspended for reasons unrelated to the investigation, then to play the spring game as scheduled.

The Spartans took extreme measures through late winter and early spring to protect the identities of the players under investigation, practicing under cloak of media secrecy, with Dantonio just last week breaking a program-wide public silence.

Dantonio said he hold his players "that we were going to step into the light" with the spring game, after which no player was made available for interviews, continuing a media blackout which has spanned all of spring practices."
