Marshall Shines When Hawkeyes Need Her Most

The Hawkeyes opened the B1G season defeating Wisconsin 85-78. For the Hawkeyes: Caitlin Clark had 23 points and 3 assists; Monika Czinano 18 points and 9 rebounds and Gabbie Marshall 15 points. The Badgers were paced by Sydney Hilliard with 26 points while Imani Lewis pitched in 17 points and 11 rebounds. From three the Hawkeyes were 11-28 and Wisconsin 4-11.


“It is great to start on a good note in the Big Ten,” said sophomore guard Gabbie Marshall. “As a young team especially, and get that first win in the Big Ten and keep going from there.”

Marshall played a major role in Iowa joining the conference win column. Three days after her defense provided a spark at Drake, she scored 15 points against the Badgers and made 3 of 5 from distance. Marshall and teammate Kate Martin swiped a game-high three steals.

The timeliness of Marshall’s scoring was paramount: 11 of her points came in the second and third quarters. During that stretch, Iowa outscored Wisconsin, 37-36.

“Credit to my teammates. They made the right passes and I put myself in the right position so they could find me,” Marshall said. “It is easy when you have such good passers on your team to find an open spot and I found the open shot.”

The Hawkeyes extend their home winning streak to 38, and like a majority of those, this was a group effort. Freshman Caitlin Clark overcame an off shooting game to score 23. Junior Monika Czinano added 18 and sophomore McKenna Warnock scored 12

Purdue falls to 1-1 after dropping matchup against Valparaiso.

It's safe to say that Valparaiso and Drake would not finish last in the B1G. Valpo is now 2-0 after knocking off Purdue in West Lafayette 52-47. Purdue's offense is in mid-season form.

Understatement of the Day entry:

Purdue ended the game shooting only 27% from the field, and a rough 0-15 from three point range which proved to be detrimental for the Boilermakers.

– Behind timely defensive stops and freshman Caitlin Clark’s 14 fourth-quarter points, the University of Iowa women’s basketball team erased an 18-point deficit to stun Iowa State, 82-80, on Wednesday in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Game on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The comeback victory is Iowa’s fifth-straight win in the rivalry and extends its home-winning streak to 39 — the second longest streak in the country. The win also captures a de facto state championship for Iowa since the Hawkeyes previously defeated Northern Iowa and Drake.

“The fourth quarter and dramatic finish was amazing,” Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder said. “We only led for one minute, but at least we picked the right minute.”

Clark, who scored a career-high 34 points, put her mark on the rivalry, draining a game-winning, step-back, fallaway 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining to complete Iowa’s unthinkable comeback.

“If you’re going to take (that shot), you better be confident,” Clark said. “I didn’t think twice. I just pulled it and it went in.”

35 pts (11-25, 4-10 3P, 9-9 FT), 7 reb, 4 ast, 4 TO, 2 blk, 1 stl in 36 min

I could see her putting up 40 pts on the Gophers.

The Hawkeyes were let down a bit by Monika Czinano (24 points) who was 10-16 from the field (she missed a few she usually knocks down).

For Michigan State, Alyza Winston scored 25 breaking her previous high versus the Gophers. Winston was 6-12 from three and set the tone early. Clouden chipped in 21.

Iowa trailed the whole game sometimes by double digits and then scored 27 in the third and 27 in the fourth to make it a game.
 

Maryland defeated Rutgers in Piscataway 91-87. Tied 68 all beginning the fourth, Maryland hit 5-6 threes in the first 5:00 minutes of the final quarter taking a 12 point lead before the Scarlet Knights battled back late.

Mimi Collins led Maryland with 22 points and Diamond Miller knocked down 19. Maryland played seven players. Masonius played 8 minutes while everyone else played at least 29.

Guirantes, as usual, led Rutgers with 33 points 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

Injury Note: 5:00 minutes into the game the Scarlet Knight's Tekia Mack landed awkwardly trying to rebound a free throw. She landed faced down and yelled for help. Mack was stretchered off the court.

UPDATE: Postgame, Stringer said Mack appeared to have separated her shoulder.

How to beat the Rutgers press.

Hawkeyes did it enough to defeat the Scarlet Knights 90-84. Guirantes had 34 points and 5 assists for Rutgers while Clark posted 28 points and 6 assists for Iowa. Hawkeyes were 12-22 from three and Rutgers 11-27. It was a fun game to watch.

Michigan really thumped Northwestern yesterday in Evanston. NW was never in it.

It looked like a combination of a hangover from a sloppy Wildcat loss in Nebraska and too much Michigan post power. Ex Husker Leigha Brown. Brown had 22 points (4-5) from three. Naz Hillmon dominated inside with 26 points and 12 rebounds. ODD STAT: Michigan committed 20 turnovers and Northwestern 6.

The anticipated meeting between Nebraska and Nebraska transfer, Leigha Brown, did not occur in Ann Arbor. Brown missed the contest because of Covid protocols.

As a result, the undefeated Wolverines barely outlasted the Huskers 64-62. Michigan's Naz Hillmon stepped up with 35 points and 22 rebounds (those are not typos). For Nebraska Sam Haiby scored 27 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

 

Northwestern (4-2) defeated Iowa (4-2) in Evanston 77-67. It was the first game I've seen Caitlin Clark get frustrated. Clark finished with 8 points, 8 assists and 5 fouls in 33 minutes. Veronica Burton harassed Clark all night. It was also the best game the Wildcats have played for a while. NU out three pointed the Hawkeyes 7-15 to 5-19.

Monika Cizano was 13-14 from the field for 28 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. But the rest of the Hawkeyes sort of disappeared. Warnock finished with 3 points.

For Northwestern Hamilton had 19 points, Burton 18 and Wood 17. Courtney Shaw who's playing regularly at the post chipped in 8 points. a mere 20 points fewer than her Hawkeye counterpart.
 

Burton must have played tough D. She had too many layups and open 3's against us.
 

Naz Hillmon with 50 points and 16 rebounds in an 81-77 loss at Ohio State. Buckeyes were playing without AAliyah Patty and the Wolverines are still without Leigha Brown. Michigan trailed by 15 at one point; but held the Buckeyes scoreless for the first 5 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter. Michigan took the lead late but couldn't keep it. Plus, the Wolverines last gasp, trailing by two, was a weird, cross court contested inbounds pass with 9 seconds remaining that went off a Michgan hand.
 

Michigans sports are being suspended for 2 weeks which means the Gophers game on feb 4th game is ppd

Caught some of the the game against Northwestern where she started of 10 for 10 from the floor. After seeing your post I decided to look up her FG %. After tonight she will be over 70% for the year!
 

In West Lafayette, the Lady Lions took down the Boilers 80-70. It was a close game until the third quarter when PSU finished up 57-50. PSU pushed the lead to 75-56 in the fourth. Johnasia Cash was a beast for Penn State: 28 points and 12 rebounds. Niya Beverly help her along with 14 points and 7 assists.

Sunday afternoon’s women’s basketball game between Ohio State and Northwestern has been postponed out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of the participants from both teams.

The decision to postpone was mutually agreed upon by the head team physicians from both institutions due to a presumptively positive test during the pre-game testing window. The Big Ten Conference will work with both institutions to identify potential rescheduling options.

Maryland, still annoyed that the original game was postponed, came out on a mission to crush the Hawkeyes. The Terps lead at the end of one quarter 41-21. Diamond Miller (14 points) is 3-3 from three and Katie Benzan (15 points) is 5-5 from three. Angel Reese made a brief appearance and has 2 points.
 

At the half, it's 68-51 Maryland. Caitlin Clark has 29 points (9-13 from three) for the Hawkeyes. Benzan has 24 points (8-9 from three).
 

111-95 final. Iowa cut the Terp lead to 14 early in the fourth; but Brenda called a timeout and the Terps responded with 9 straight points. Iowa returns to a Thursday showdown with Michigan in Iowa City.
 

Michigan State playing without Cook (knee) and Ayrault (concussion protocol) lead Rutgers 46-39 at the end of three. Rutgers defense caused Spartan panic in the fourth and the Scarlet Knights won 63-53.
After the final buzzer, Tekia Mack was dashing off the court looking back at the Spartan bench and ran headlong into referee Angie Enlund who was backing away from the scoring table. Enlund was flattened and perhaps knocked out when she hit the floor. The stretcher was being brought out when BTN switched games. Mack appeared disconsolate seated on the bench.
