Chicago and the US got a resounding F-you from the rest of the world when it was the first finalist eliminated this morning.....now its between Madrid and Rio....

I'd guess Madrid gets it, even though they've never had games in South America.

I dont see this as an F-U from the rest of the world. Why do we deserve it? We are the last country that should get it seeing we had the 96 Summer games and 02 Winter games. We should be the first finalist out.

That plus the fact that Chicago's residents/local gov't weren't real big on ponying up more money for cost overruns. I'm a little bummed, but only because I was excited to have TCF get more visibility.

Plus, Chicago sucks. Can you imagine the traffic if the games were there for a few weeks?

There is the Chicago style hot dogs.

I just thought of something: Make a Chicago Style hot dog, but instead of having it on a bun, have it fried in Pronto Pup batter! :D

I hope it goes to Rio de Janeiro, but I suspect that the dirty old man, Juan Antonio Samanranch, will be trying to cement Madrid as a deathbed legacy.

Chicago, the most politically corrupt city in America.

For the Olympics? Chicago was never a great choice. It would have to be way too spread out. I bet it goes to Reo. One its never been in south america and two Brazil is one corrupt ass country (I'll go out on a limb and say they are even more corrupt than Chicago politics) I'm betting they fixed it before Obama got a chance to shill for the US.

I'm bummed because I'm a huge soccer fan and would have loved to see a few games at the bank.

Rio got it. I propose the opening ceremonies are nothing more than a bunch of hot Brazilian broads parading in the sand in their "swimsuits".

Brazil is much better than what it was 10 or 15 or 20 years ago.
I think they still have problems but they have improved to have one of the strongest economies in the world (they have a surplus!)

Rio is absolutely beautiful and the people are incredibly nice, I am glad they got the bid.

Dissapointing of course. But the world and IOC did just give a giant middle finger to Chicago, Obama, and America in general.

As for the chosing who gets to host the games might just be the most corrupt thing in the world. Members of the IOC can take "gifts" from candidate cities. It's crazy. Anyway in the end the US TV networks is the group who pay the IOC bills and easily has the biggest contract so in a way they are biting the hand that feeds them.

Oh well Twin Cities 2020!!

Sure, lets bring the Olympics here! :)

How about the Winter Olympics? We'd have to build a mountain, the downhill skiing isn't quite up to Olympic standards.

We'd have to build quite a mountain. FIS requirements call for 800m (2,625 feet) of vertical drop for their downhill runs.

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

I've long been in favor of, if a new Viking stadium is built, hosting a summer games here. We are on the verge of opening a second new stadium and probably will build a 3rd, we have multiple great indoor arenas, and are on the cusp of building another major transit line. We could involve the entire state in the effort by having certain events in Duluth, Rochester, St Cloud, Mankato, etc. I don't think it's a bad idea at all.

I should clarify what I mean about a new Vikings stadium...meaning that it could serve as the Olympic stadium prior to being converted for the Vikings.

It would have to be the other way around since the next Olympics would be 2020 and the Vikes lease ends 2011 or 2012.

I don't think what the IOC wants is what the Vikings want in a stadium. Vikings want a modern NFL stadium with clubs, suites, restarants, etc. The IOC doesn't want those things. Besides if the Vikings have to wait until 2020 for a new stadium with no garentees for about 4 years they are gone. I think the best idea would be to follow the London model and build a stadium that after the games is designed to go from 80000 seat to 20000. Then you put an MLS team in the stadium after the games.

The Wolves would get a new arena to out of the deal with a new basketball arena because the Target Center simply wouldn't cut it in a decade for an Olympic quality arena. Alot of people think its already in the lower half of NBA arenas.

You are right on that it would take the entire state to host the games. The biggest thing that the rest of the state would have to deal with is the massive influx of people for that amount of time. So in otherwords if the Twin Cities get the 2020 games it would be a great time for a vacation if you live in the Twin Cities.

I can understand that, but how can they say FU to Oprah?

They will regret that.
