I believe I've seen a few topics here on the Hole ripping Gregg Doyel, a CBS sports writer and apparently a Kentucky kiss-ars and Tubby hater. I only mention this because I recently came across his over-the-top analysis of the Calipari hire.

After Winning Like A Wildact, Calipari Gets Chance at Kentucky

Although I like the hire for KU, I'm not ready to crown them kings just yet.

Doyel's goffy prophesy need only be compared to his prior take on Gillespie:

Five best hires
Billy Gillispie, Kentucky: Not just a home run, this was a walk-off grand slam. In all of college basketball, and this includes that cute little bugger down there at Florida, Gillispie was the perfect hire for Kentucky. By the time he's done running Louisville out of the state, the Cardinals will be getting their mail in Missouri.

At least Sid and other sports writers fess up when they're wrong from time to time.

Typical Doyel hyperbole. I think Calipari will be a huge success at UK, but to suggest Kentucky will be that dominant -- take over college basketball -- is positively ludicrous. There are just too many good programs out there for that to happen. Also find it interesting that he mentions other top-tier programs (Duke, North Carolina, UConn, UCLA, etc.) and nary a mention of Michigan State? Yet another subtle dig (intended) at the Big Ten, failing to acknowledge it is home to one of the THE premier basketball programs in the country.

Also, Calipari won't be able to cheat to get recruits like he did at Memphis. Almost all of his big recruits came as package deals...parents got jobs, etc....well that won't happen at UK cause of the scrutiny the program is constantly under. Now, he'll still get great players, but I'm not sure if he can repeat the success he had at Memphis.

Remember Reusse's column, early on in the Daunte Culpepper era, where he said (probably tongue in cheek) that Culpepper would change the game because NFL defenses would be unable to tackle him? This reminds me of that column.

Doyel's one of the poorest examples of a sports columnist out there. Rip and burn is his philosophy along with being outlandish. Let's say Coach Cal doesn't succeed to these heights-well, it sets up perfectly for a column about Cal underachieving, doesn't it?

I'm not sure Doyel is a "Kentucky goon" per say. However, if you were to drop the Kentucky prefix and just said "goon", I would completely agree. :D

I have seen no evidence of this outside of Milt Wagner (who stayed after Dejuan left and got his college degree. How can that be wrong?) and it comes off as sour grapes. If you want to throw stones a lot of players at UK had some very nice rides under Tubby. Does that automatically make Tubby Smith a cheater or one who "looks the other way"?

I understand the perception from the Sutton scandal but it's funny how programs like UNC, Duke and UCLA are given free passes for their transgressions by the media and other fans.

All this negative stuff has been about perception and not reality. Dan Wetzel, who has been killing it with his series recently on college athletics, wrote an article praising the hire. The NCAA cleared Calipari and any improper involvement by Wes. With all this smoke..you would have thought someone would have found the fire by now.

Greg Doyle is also a butthead who I wouldn't hire to write a receipt.

It doesn't matter to me. For your sake, I hope you're right because the NCAA will be setting up shop on Euclid Ave. waiting for the first whiff of an impropriety. Not to mention, the Lexington Herald-Leader is already sharpening the knives ready to expose the slightest hint of transgressions. For your sake, you better hope Cal is clean as a whistle or you guys could face the death penalty in several years.

You have a coach that has a reputation for being sleazy (fairly or unfairly) and a school that has a reputation for being sleazy. If so much as a hint of something bad happens, you guys are screwed royally and Cal will just go off to the NBA.

I hope not, because if that does happen some small time program is really going to get it.

You have got to laugh your arse off when Greg Doyle states:

What a complete goof. No cred at all for this guy.

I wonder if anybody has shoved this back in Doyel's face yet. If not, they probably should because this guy has a VERY high opinion of himself. If you've had the misfortune of reading some of his chatlines or response to emailers, you know what I'm talking about.

It'd be interesting to see what kind of self-promoting crap he'd come back with in this case.:D:D

Doyel: This is the same clown. ...

who believes a school's past NCAA performance or a player's name recognition should play a factor in whether or not a team gets selected for an at-large bid. He was on record saying that Davidson should have been selected this season because of what they (and Curry) accomplished last season. Pure hogwash, and this guy (presumably) gets paid big bucks to write about college basketball? He & Digger Phelps are perhaps the two biggest idiots providing their "expertise" on college basketball. Sad.

Yeah, his face should be put alongside the phrase "often wrong, but never in doubt.":D

Please UNC and Duke are way more clean that Kentucky and UCLA is a clean program with the exception of the Jim Harrick years who was fired for it.

Tell me you're not this naive.

The NCAA waited till The Saint retired to hammer UCLA. You have read Bill Walton's book and know who Sam Gilbert is right?

As to Duke: The NCAA never investigated the Chris Duhon/Carlos Boozer deals but did investigate Myron Piggie and let Duke keep their Final Four appearance despite Corey Maggette clearly in violation of the rules regarding amateurism.

I clearly recall Doyel's article on the Tubby hire, as posted above, and the word "douche" was the closest thing to his description. Doyle would be a tremendous addition to the over-the-top ridiculousness of Conservative (Republican) Radio. He reminds me of a younger, male version of Ann Coulter - all talk and no sense, yet for some reason still has a job.

UK received major NCAA infractions in 1953 (Death Penalty, 0 games played that year), 1976 (2 year probation), 1988 (letter of reprimand for non-cooperation), and 1989 (2 year probation) in Basketball.

UK also received major NCAA infractions in 1964, 1976, and 2002 in Football. Total of 7 times in major sports.

UK cheated far more often than that but got away with it more often than not.

Thank you again for your agenda posting and seeking to not engage in any real discussion. Instead of discussing the situation at hand and offering points on the current debate you turn it away to something WE ALL ALREADY KNOW ABOUT.

Directly TO the point of discussion. UK cheated in 40's - 50's - 60's - 70's - 80's but got caught 4 times. Many teams cheated in 50's - 60's - 70's (etc). UK was one of them.

In 90's and 2K's, UK did not cheat in Basketball. Some still do.
