per the Orlando Sentinel:
Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck used three words to describe how his Gophers’ performed during their spring workouts.
“Innovative, challenging and process would probably be the three [ways]that I would describe our spring as,” Fleck said. “I think we’re developing. We have a saying here, ‘Don’t sacrifice what you really want down the road for what you want right now. That’s the kind of position we’re in right now.”
Few coaches have had as much coaching juice as Fleck, who has been considered one of the hottest coaching candidates in college football after transforming Western Michigan into a David among the Power 5 Goliaths. After leading the Broncos to a school-record 13 wins and a spot in the New Year’s Six bowl, Fleck made the decision to move on — inking a five-year deal in January as the Gophers’ new head coach.
Minnesota may have been coming off a nine-win season — the most since 2003 — but the program was shrouded in controversy after 10 players were suspended after they were linked to a sexual assault case. The rest of the team threatened to boycott the Holiday Bowl, arguing the suspended players were denied due process. However, the players opted to play after they were given a copy of investigation reports.
Head coach Tracy Claeys was fired a few weeks later by new athletics director Mark Croyle, a move that was rumored to be triggered by Claeys’ public support of the players’ boycott. The 36-year-old Fleck was hired a few days later.
‘Why not?’
Fleck was a hot commodity with his name mentioned for job openings across the country, but he surprised some when he chose to come to Minnesota.
“Why not, first and foremost …,” Fleck said when asked why he chose to coach the Gophers. “I really enjoy the process of taking a program from what it hasn’t had or what it hasn’t had for a very long time – we haven’t won a Big Ten championship for 60 years – and building something that you’ve always dreamed of having.
“That’s what drives me. That’s what motivates me,” he adds.
