Oregon coach Dan Lanning is advocating for college football to adopt an NFL-style schedule with limited open weeks, no long layoffs for playoff teams and a season that wraps on Jan. 1 rather than later in the month.

"I'd be in favor of creating our playoff system to mirror every other playoff system in sports," Lanning told ESPN. "The season's over, and the playoffs start shortly after. The long break is something I'm not crazy about. I wish we played every single Saturday in college football. I wish college football ended Jan. 1."

Yeah.
Play zero week as week 1
Labor Day week 2

For 2025 what a 16 team playoff would look like:

Championship weekend or play in weekend…whatever it becomes is thanksgiving weekend.
Selection show is the Sunday after thanksgiving. (Nov 30, 2025)
First 2 games take place 2 weeks after thanksgiving on a Thursday.
Another 2 game Friday
4 Saturday
First round Dec 11-13
Round of 8 Dec 18-20 (1 Th, 1 F, 2 Sat)
Round of 4 Dec 27
National championship Jan 3

Teams 17-70 play 28 bowl games (2 per day) on Dec 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30, 31, Jan 1, 2

I'm hoping that we don't see a boatload of players opting out not to play.

Spot on.

The multiple weeks (month+ in some cases) break between the season ending game and the bowl game is crazy. Momentum lost, fan interest lost, players leaving, etc. Tighten the schedule for sure.

Go Gophers!!
