I guess staying out of trouble is harder than winning freshman of the year.
 

Oregon has it goin' on this off-season.

Makes me wonder - would our fanbase put up with that level of crap in order to compete for a conference championship?
 

We've put up with a lot of it the last few seasons without even sniffing a conference championship.
 

I don't want to rehash old arguments but let's be honest. When our kids get into serious trouble (and even when they are cleared) they generally don't make it back on the team - look at the others in the Dominic Jones case.

Oregon has one of their best players cold-cock an opposing player and he still gets back on the field that same year.

I'm not saying either situation is right or wrong, I'm saying that our holier-than-thou media would be inciting a riot if that happened here.

We need to get over this holier than thou perception that we hold our athletes to a hagher standard. We may be better than some but we let alot slide (hello Kevin Whaley).

As far as I can tell, James is CHARGED with something similar to Mbakwe. I would rather have abrasions to the face than a broken jaw. Both are innocent until proven guilty.

Just to clarify, I agree with Metrolax that I would rather be clean and lose. My point is that we seem to think we run a cleaner ship than others. I don't think we do.

So much for innocent until proven guilty. I sure hope their mind wasn't this made up before they started the investigation, not to mention polluting the jury pool.

The whole quote makes it sound like he was asked if James's "celebrity" status affected the arrest, particularly after the recent arrest of two other players.

That's a cop talking anyway, what would you expect him to say? Just the act of arresting someone implies that they were involved in a criminal act. Otherwise there should have been no arrest.

That's not always the case of course. People are arrested who shouldn't have been. The Prosecutor, Judge and or jury decides guilt or innocence. Now if any of them would have said it right after an arrest, then your point would become really a problem.

Does Oregon law require Domestic violence calls to end in the arrest of someone? Is that what you are referring to? That if it was a required arrest he shouldn't have said what he said?
 

It is not that difficult to live your entire life without ever getting arrested for assault. The large majority of people (I would guess 99%) are able to figure out a way to stay out of that type of trouble. Likewise, a very high percentage of scholarship athletes at colleges and universities all over this country never get arrested for assault.

While it is also true that many people who are arrested for criminal conduct are totally innocent, that should not be the controlling factor when deciding whether or not to allow an athlete to continue to represent their school while the criminal charges are still pending. Even if the authorities do not have sufficient evidence to obtain a conviction that does not mean the athlete is innocent. And furthermore, if the athlete goes to trial and is found to be not guilty, that doesn't mean that their behavior didn't violate the Student Code of Conduct, the Team Rules, or otherwise reflected poorly on the school.

Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege and not a right. Even if the athlete's poor behavior does does not warrant taking their scholarship away, that doesn't mean a school should allow them to continue participate in intercollegiate sports. As public representatives of their school athletes should be held to a higher standard of conduct than regular students. A requirement that only athletes who have been convicted of a felony can suspended from their sports is much too low of a standard.

The police don't operate under innocent until proven guilty, how would they ever arrest anyone?
 

That bumps the Gophers out of the top 10 in the Fulmer Cup at least, and Oregon shoots up to #2.
 

Oregon may have sold their soul for that Rose Bowl appearance.

  2. Rob Beard their kicker charged with assault today in connection with a fight that ended with him in the hospital.
  3. LaMichael incident with the girl, he also was charged with an assault in high school
  4. Jermiah Masoli, their star qb, was accused of robbing a frat house. Masoli also served time in high school in detention centers for robbing individuals at a bus stop.
  5. Garrett Embry, backup wr, accused in the same incident as Masoli and dismissed from team.
  6. Three Wr's were cited in December for shooting out a window with a pellet gun.
  7. A backup de was kicked off the team for retaliating and assaulting an individual who was suspected of assaulting Beard.

Based on talk radio out here it sounds like Oregon fans are ok with these actions because Chip Kelly took them to the Rose Bowl. They're defending their program by saying at least we arent as bad as Tennessee and Florida State:D

If Brewster gets the Gophers to the Rose Bowl, I have a hard time imagining fat pat and kfan giving gopher players a free pass for such incidents. Ah, the differences of a pro town vs a college town.
 

As far as Blount goes, I don't know what Hout said to him, but I've been in that situation and I'm not saying in any way shape or form that it is acceptable, but I can understand it. And Hout was classless in victory.

Yes Hout was classless but Blount did more than punch a player. He also got physical with a teammate trying to seperate him from the Boise players. Don't forget Scott Frost had to keep him from a Ron Artest situation and police were forced to escort him off the field.
In my mind the punch was just the first step in what became an embarassment to Oregon, college football, and sports in general.

I wont blame the Boise player just as much as I will refrain from blaming the woman if she started the incident that resulted in LaMichael assaulting her. You are responsible for your actions at all times, bad sportsmanship or not.

are we OK out here with what is going on with the Oregon football team. No true Duck fan is. No fan of any team is OK with their athletes acting in ways that embarrass their respective school. Anyone who says otherwise is one the the 10 percenters who are whack jobs who wear jerseys to work on fridays cause Saturday is GAMEDAY BABY!!!!
 



The girl he broke up with was trying to "work out their relationship" and the cheerleader classified him as her boyfriend.

If the cops don't believe he committed an act he should never have been arrested. Convincing a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed the act is a different thing.
