Early storyline
This game will bring some national intrigue. Fleck, an up-and-coming coach known for his relentless enthusiasm while turning Western Michigan into a New Year’s Six bowl participant, will face a Power 5 team for the first time with the Golden Gophers. But this is also a key early-season contest for an OSU team aiming to take another step in Gary Andersen’s third season. To return to a bowl game for the first time since 2013, this is the type of game the Beavers need to win.
For Oregon State to win...
The Beavers offense must find life against a Gophers defense that was stingy last season but only returns four starters in 2017. Additionally, OSU’s run defense that ranked 102nd nationally (218 yards allowed per game) must contain the veteran duo of Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks.
The offensive player you should know: Running back Rodney Smith
Smith should not be an unfamiliar name, as he rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns in Minnesota’s win against the Beavers last season. But he and Shannon Brooks make up a formidable backfield duo, combining for more than 1,800 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2016. And the Golden Gophers might especially lean on those ball-carriers early on as they break in a new starting quarterback and work to replace their leading wide receiver and three starting offensive linemen.
The defensive player you should know: Linebacker Jonathan Celestin
For a defense filling holes up front and in the secondary, Celestin will need to be an anchor in the middle. Last season, he ranked second on the team with 80 tackles (seven for loss) while adding 2.5 sacks, four pass breakups, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries.
