the students come here and rip the older folks, but tonight student v. student was not even a contest. orange crush is well choreographed, unique, tasteful and LOUD.

nobody carried anybody tonight in maroon and gold.

The student section got schooled
You won't like hearing this but given the orange krush had a fraction of the numbers and still was louder and better organized than our student section exposes this idea that the flaw at the barn is in the oldsters. If the student section started a cheer I never heard it but I sure heard the krush. Clearly there is not organization around cheers that lends itself to others joining in. "You're a pussy" while amusing is not apt to be picked up by the entire fan base.

Added: The Student section needs to quit lamenting the oldsters and get busy organizing a way to carry the energy.

Orange Crush > MN Student Section > Oldsters

I don't see it exposing anything except that the Orange Krush is better-organized.
 


1) The student section DOES carry the energy in The Barn, remove them and you may get the occassional standing ovation during a big defensive possession. I'm not saying we're the most original or creative, because we are FAR from it, but we DO carry the energy.
2) Find it hard to believe that non-students would engage in cheers if they were well organized (i.e. "Let's Go Gophers")
3) It's a lot easier to look like a great student section when you travel 10+ hours via bus and generally have nothing to lose; we thought we were pretty cool at Michigan too
4) A good majority of the students are solely there for the social aspect and in turn have no real interest in the game, meaning they're not nearly as engaged or loud. You put our top 100 students against Illinois' top 100 and I'd say it'd be pretty close.
5) Don't you think that a little bit of the effectiveness of the student section should be due to the team's actual play? A missed lay-up here, a turnover there, obviously we're going to be louder with the more positive plays. When do you give props to a student section after a LOSS?
6) Why do we always have to blame the fans? Let's talk about the PLAYERS and the GAME
 

haha, you guys are idiots. Firstly, what the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# was there to cheer about? Their fans were into it because they traveled, it was a special trip for them. For us, it was just another night watching Colton Iverson represent the University to the nation on national television.

Student section noise, or noise in general, will increase in direct relation to the game's tempo. It's as simple as this:

home points in last minute / away points in last minute = relative crowd noise rating

The higher the rating, the higher the decibels of noise. This formula will hold true across almost all of college basketball, with a few exceptions.

Point, GET OFF THE STUDENT SECTION'S ARSES.
 

I concur. A tip of the cap to the Orange Crush last night. They were loud, and their team appreciated it. I saw at least 2 Illini players (McCamey and Davis) salute the upper deck after the game.

Owned by 150 visiting students. And they were able to do it without the dispicable foul language our students use;

i.e. F the Packers, F the Buckeyes, F Thad Matta, You're a pussy.

How clever. Do you realized there are actually fans under 12 at the game?

They were pointing to them right before tip-off as well.

I'm on the student's side on this issue. I've been to four games this year and the "older" fans barely even clapped let alone cheered. Most of the people next to me never uncrossed their arms. Very disappointing to see the Barn start to slide back to the Monson era. At least the student section gives an effort.
 

The Orange Krush is one of the best in the country. Not Izzone good or Cameron Crazie good, but good. It doesn't matter about the ebb and flow of a game, those sections are still loud. A 6 point deficit isn't a blowout.

I think we can pretty much put to rest any notion that we have a better student section than most other schools in the land. Clearly we don't.

That was quite evident last night.

Our students are no better or no worse than 90% of the student sections throughout the land. They cheer when the Gophers do well and they stand mute (or leave) when the Gophers don't.

I just wish they would stop congratulating themselves on how awesome they are. They aren't awesome. They are average. Very very average.
 

Coming from a student:

1) I really hate it how every time an opposing player gets injured, some students cheer. Are you kidding me? That is uncalled for in ever spot.

2) I also dislike the stupid bickering between "oldies" and "students" here. There is plenty of room for improvement on both ends. Example- Most of the old folks stood for the whole halftime show of racing dogs, but only for about a minute or so of game action that I noticed. Kinda lame. Example- The loudest the students ever get are when booing a bad call. Many times, it's reasonably quiet on defense until about 10 or so seconds left on the shot clock.

3) I don't mind profanity, really at all, but the only time I enjoy it at games is the BS chant. Not sure why I make an exception there, but I feel a little embarrassed every time we start chanting "F something".

Like I said, room for improvement all around, so in theory, we should stop pointing fingers and do something about it. But we won't.
 



My complaint...

Mt complaint is they stuck the Orange Crush in Section 201 right in front of me! :mad:

OTOH, according to my wife it did get me on ESPN.

Becky and OSU are hard to judge because they play in NBA style arenas, but I would say the student section ranks only ahead of PSU and Northwestern in the B10.
 

Almost every Illini player took a moment to acknowledge the kids that were in 201 after the game.

Their disguise was pretty good.. even did some pro-Gopher chants before the game... and they were well behaved.

The guys were about the geekiest looking group I've ever seen and most of the girls were 250+, but they had fun and got to see a road victory.
 

To be honest the Michigan message boards said all the same things about the Barnyard when they made the trip to Crisler.
 

Any idea why we put the opposing students in those seats? Are their not bad seats to put them in? Instead we upset season ticket holders who do sit in those sections by forcing them to put up with Illiniois fans all game.

IMO, take the two upper deck corner sections (or another section with no season ticket holders) and give them the whole section.

Or do we not want to give our good friends from around the conference bad seats? Hopefully we don't get too ruthless and beat them too!

You forgot Iowa, but then again, their students don't even bother going to games.

PS the Tubby bowing thing is so old and lame. Get over it. Do the cameron crazies do that for Coach K?

These types of chants aren't my favorites either, mostly because of the little kids in the arena, but I think the general public forfeits their right to whine about any of this when they sit silently the whole game. There are plenty of "Let's Go Gophers" and other 'tasteful' chants throughout the game. Does the rest of the arena ever join in? Nope.

Hear a chant you don't like? Cover it up! 12000>2000.

About the bowing thing-are you kidding me?
 

Where is the student who so proudly patted himself on the back after the Purdue win?? Since that game they have been terrible. I havent seen a student section as zombie like when the other team is shooting free throws, what a joke. And yes the immature chants are ridiculous, lets be a lil more clever.
 

I think alot of the current student section culture has resulted from past attempts at being organized and creative being utterly destroyed and banned by the williams staff.

No surprise here. Badger Vandelay gives Wisky a complete pass and blames the arena. Why? Because he knows Wisky's student section isn't much to brag about....

Notice how he throws out a "becky" to cover himself. How weak is that.

Mid tier: Minnesota, Wisconsin, OSU
Bottom tier: Iowa, Penn State, NW, Michigan

I thought Tubby was supposed to bring back the energy to Williams - wasnt that the expectation?

The atmosphere is no better now that it was 5 years ago. The haskins era was great for atmophere.

This may be true. But it completely skips the fact that the student section is better than just about everybody else in the Barn.

Maturi's regime has killed the hockey student section as well with their "be nice" campaign.

hilarious. laughable. interesting. nxet.

5 years ago we lost to winona state at HOME and to Clemson we trailed by 30 at one point at home with less than 3K in attendance the last 5 minutes. how quickly the hypocrisy little one forgets.
 

Somehow the student section needs to get more creative and more involved. That is a fact.

It'd be easier to accomplish if the team won as well though, but even in the close Illinois game, very few students were loud or chanting. It has been an overall very disappointing year, minus the first 5 minutes of most games.
