Minnesota. It would take less of a miracle than the US beating the Russians in 1980!

On a more serious note, Tubby has been pretty successful against ranked out of conference opponent, if we can find a way to deal with Duke, I think we become the team to beat. Hopefully the team as a chip on their shoulder from ending up behind Wisconsin in the coach's poll (how many votes does Bo 'Grinch' Ryan get?).

SS, I hate it when you change the title of your Thread and OPPIE

You make me look more nuts than I already am.

You do good work, though. :)

If you actually think that we would be the team to beat you're a little nuts. Louisville is and would be the odds on favorite for sure. I do think that we have a slight shot at winning this thing but we certainly won't be favored in any way. I would be ecstatic with a 2-1 showing.

Pig Man, I somewhat disagree with you. This Battle4Atlantis is loaded with good teams, and the winner is gonna be the one who gets hot for 3 consecutive days.

Maybe, just maybe, our 10-11 man rotation could be the depth needed to get it all. Time will tell.

p.s. The Gophers would not have been invited to this Select Tournament if the Committee that selects these teams didn't think we would be representative. Somebody, or Somebodies, looked into the future last year and said "Hey, watch these Minnesota Gophers under Tubby Smith."

GO GOPHERS!!!

Me, too. Stating the obvious, but Gophers must avoid the goose egg at all costs. Beating Duke right out of the chute guarantees the Gophers go home with something beneficial in terms of quality win(s). Not to mention it pretty much guarantees 3 studly opponents for SOS, not necessarily the case if we're in the loser's bracket.

Yeah if we go 2-1 but lose the first game woopidee doo who cares

I disagree, a loss to Duke, but still potentially coming out with victories over ranked Memphis and Missouri teams, would be a good showing in my opinion. I suppose more likely if we lose to Duke, we end up playing VCU and Stanford as our other two games, which aren't as good looking, but still decent opponents, VCU is at about the same level as we are I think. I don't think Stanford is as good, but they also pounded us in the NIT last year, so I don't know about them.

I feel like we might have a better chance of going 2-1 if we lose to Duke than if we beat them, and lose to Memphis and Missouri. SS, what is the better outcome: 2-1 with a loss to Duke and wins over VCU and Stanford, or 1-2 with a win over Duke and losses to Memphis and Missouri?

I agree Don but I think most would agree that the teams most likely to either get hot or have the talent to overcome a hot team are Duke and Louisville. Like I said, I do think we could win the whole thing, as any of the teams in the tournament could. I just think that to say that if we beat Duke we are the team to beat would be foolish. Louisville would definitely still be the team to beat and Memphis would possibly be ahead of us as well.

That's a tough question, especially not knowing how those 3 teams will finish the season. But one thing we can pretty much count on is Duke is gonna' be good for 25-30 wins and a RPI in the top 15, at worst. If you put a gun to my head, I'll take the 1-2 with a win over Duke and losses to teams (Memphis & Mizzou/Louisville) that should be very good, and who are likely to add a lot more SOS pop than either VCU or Stanford.
