1) the fumble botched call. Gophers ball down 14-9, totally changes the intensity/pressure of the game. What if they went down and scored a TD? 16/17-14 Gophers. WI scored the TD and were all loosy goosy and filled with confidence. Would love to hit rewind and go back and give the gophers the ball and finish the game.

2) Anybody can see that Wisconsin's pass defense is horrible. Open it up and throw the damn ball. I think if we would have aggresively thrown downfield and passed to set up the run vs. run to set up the pass we could have scored 40. I think the one area where we are better is our WR's and Lair vs. their horrible secondary. The down side of that is Wisconsin would have had the ball more and likely crammed more points down our throats.

Either way, I think WI wins. They are a vastly better team than us. It's just unfortunate that officials can have such a big impact at such a crucial juncture of the game.

Let's hope that the Twins can scratch one out tonight.

It Was the Turning Point

We'd dominated the second quarter, then got what looked like a sure fumble recovery. Awful, gutless call by the refs. Then, on the next series, a bogus holding call on an incomplete pass on 3rd & long. With our squad, we have no margin for error vs. a team of monsters like WI. If we get either call, we are in a totally different place psychologically, and so is Wisconsin.

The Badgers were able to relax after that, we wore down in the heat amidst all their bulk, and that was that. Just a damn shame.

It was horrible.

You could tell on the face of the Umpire that he knew they had F'd up royally and they were looking for a way to spin it and cover their tracks. Down by contact without being down, nor being stopped, nor refraining from keeping your legs pumping? All in the span of abour 0.4 seconds? Unreal. You can't just say "well they lost by 18". That woould have totally changed the intensity/pressure points/flow of the game.

How can that crew be allowed to work another game????

With what?

The fact that anyone can see that the Badgers pass defense is terrible, and should have been attacked relentlessly?

the fact that that was a horrible calll at a very key part of the game. Yoou could see the body language change on both sides of the ball after that "drive"

We did get some help on a spot that gave us a first down late in the first half, so I'm not going to complain about the fumble non-call.

Badgers are solid. I don't think they'll win the Big 10, but they may be playing on New Year's Day. They have some holes on defense. Their offense looks the same as always. They run a lot of wrinkles off of a really solid base of plays. Tolzein is a clone of both Sorgi and Stocco. Doesn't make many mistakes.

PS--Was Watt banged up today? I only saw him make an impact on one or two plays.

It's no secret the badger corners are below average at best. I'm stunned we didn't take more shots down the field. Michigan state knew they could run over the Badgers but this staff is dilusional if they thought they could do the same. They had to know they needed to pass to win and attacking the corners is by far the best way to go against the badgers.

And they could have used play action to create 1-1 matchups on the edge before 3rd down. The way not to create 1-1 matchups is to wait until 3rd and 7 to call play action - which never works since the safeties are back in coverage to begin with and you typically don't get those matchups.

Good teams get over things that hurt them during the course of the game. A la South Carolina and Garcia's safety and Alabama's whole game at Arkansas.
