meeting the bb team before the game. All seemed like great kids. Trevor and Rodney sat next to each other and I asked which one could jump the highest? they both smiled... seemed like they both wanted to say themselves!

I agree Book, chatting with the BB team was the highlight of my day.

Saw them outside stadium

there were a number of younger guys I did not recognize..any recruits visiting? Football game couldn't have help that cause.

The best thing 'basketball wise' would be the gophers may be getting Bryan Allen in November.

Brewster said last week that Allen is likely red-shirting in football this season because his broken ankle will take awhile to heal. I wonder how it will impact hoops.

Was Oto Osenieks there?

Out of total luck as I was walking to the stadium, I saw the team walking there, too. Oto was definitely there, with a huge smile on his face. He just seems like a "happy-go-lucky" dude.

Doubt he plays hoops coming off broken ankle. There may even be NCAA rule that you can't play another sport if you RS in your scholarship sport.

He broke it in spring practice, so he'll likely be ready to play hoops at some point soon. I got the impression that Brewster was hinting that Allen would be healthy later in the year, but that they wouldn't want to waste an entire year of eligibility for just a couple of games late in the year. I don't totally recall the situation, however.

Not sure of any rules on redshirts and playing in other sports.

I may need to do a little research on this one, but I don't think Allen not playing football this year would preclude him from playing bball this year.

Don't think redshirt rules have much of anything to do with scholarships... and they relate to competition in specific sports. What I think would be relevant is the 5-year clock... i.e., once the clock starts, you've got 4 years of eligibility available in all sports... which would not be an issue in Allen's case.

This all, of course, is assuming his football redshirt would be of the automatic nature (i.e., didn't play) vs. a medical redshirt..

I'm looking forward to the USC game next weekend... hopefully a small miracle occurs and we pull out a victory. Some top bball recruits will be there.. be careful not to chat with them, as always.

Really hoping Tharpe's visit goes well. BTW, Bruce Barron (Brehm Prep - IL) has cut his list to Oregon, Oklahoma State and Cincinnati, according to his coach.

I know you can't redshirt in football (on scholarship) as frosh and play basketball that year - unless rule has changed.

PS Cincy 1 Of 3 For Barron

UC coach Mick Cronin has the gift of gab. The Bearcats have two very solid SOPH PG (Wright and Parker) who will likely share PG the next 3 years. And two G recruits already committed for 2011.

As I mentioned, this is one I need to research more, but this sounds strange / hard to believe. What is the rule(s) you're referring to, or are you thinking of a particular example?

Who are the two 2011 guard commits? They did get a nice commit from forward Shaq Thomas a couple of days ago, but don't know of any guard commits for their 2011 class.

? # 1 - this came up when UK wanted to play some FB recruits in basketball in late 1990's. The rule was if you redshirt in your scholarship sport, you can't play another sport.

? # 2 - two Prep schoolers. 6-3 PG Ge-lawn Guyn and 6-5 SG Kristian Smith, both committed last spring.

1) Will have to look into that one... wonder if there were cases of guys getting a tennis scholarship, not playing tennis, but playing bball..

2) Smith is definitely a wing guy, don't see him playing any PG. Forgot about Guyn... hard guy to follow. Thought he may be headed to Brewster, but then headed to South Kent for prep?.. don't see either Smith or Guyn as a big concern for Barron...

3) What did you have for lunch?

# 1 - it's the football, basketball interface that complicates it.

# 2 - Smith will be SG at UC, Guyn PG. UC will have 3 PG on the roster in 2011-12. Two Jrs and 1 Soph (Guyn).

http://www.gobearcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/cinn-m-baskbl-mtt.html Wright & Parker.

# 3 - tomato soup, turkey w/MP & stuffing + green beans.

I walked through the autograph line and all Gopher players were there except Al Nolen. Oto was definately there as was Chip Armelin.
