No search firm, no committee. Chances are he had his candidate or candidates in hand, before he canned Tubby.

He's definitely not cut from the same cloth as Maturi. That's a good thing.

Maturi might go down as the single worst thing to ever happen to the U of M's athletic department.

Agree. Teague is about as polar opposite from Maturi as it gets. If Maturi was still in charge, Tubby would NEVER have gotten fired. And even if he did, a search firm would have been hired on the spot. Maturi never gave the impression he had any idea what he was doing when it came to hiring or firing of coaches. Teague on the other hand clearly has the confidence to do the job himself and that alone is a refreshing change in philosophy.

I used to think that GH was too harsh on Maturi, that he deserved credit for the stadium, running a clean department and for a certain amount of idealism or, perhaps, fairness in a cynical business. However, the Borton extension as he walked out the door flipped me. That was simple cronyism.

People used to love that he worked 60 hour weeks and ran 5 miles a day. He did a terrible job at the U and his legacy will reflect that.
