per the Omaha World Herald:
PLAYER TO WATCH
Shannon Brooks, running back: Minnesota gave the true freshman his second start against Purdue, and the 6-foot, 206-pounder responded with 176 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. It was the highest output by a first-year Gopher back since 2003 and tied for the eighth-highest total by a freshman in school history. “He was unbelievable on Saturday,” coach Jerry Kill said. “I mean, I’ve coached a long time, and I’ve never seen a freshman run around people, run through them … it was unbelievable some of the runs he made.” Brooks wasn’t highly recruited out of Atlanta, but made such a good first impression that the Gophers knew almost immediately that they wouldn’t be redshirting him.
COACH
Jerry Kill (29-28 at Minnesota, 92-56 overall): Minnesota is on track for a third straight eight-win season and fourth straight bowl trip, the payoff from hiring Kill away from Northern Illinois in 2010. The dividends were really rolling in a year ago, when the Gophers pounded both Michigan (30-14) and Iowa (51-14) — the first time they beat both Big Ten foes in the same season since 1967 — before winning at Nebraska. Kill’s teams are built around size, physical play and toughness, but the missing ingredient in Minneapolis has often been talent at the skill positions.
