We already have an informal hand shake with somebody but the time for the announcement is not quite right for him. Besides once the handshake is done its going to take a week with some serious talking with his agent before a final agreement is made. I don't think they want an announcement before its all sealed and delivered. It would really be bad if the announcement is made before the final agreement and then it would fall through for one reason or another.

Who it is, I have no idea but I do have my preferences. (Which I stated in a previous thread.)

I think a handshake has been made too.

If you listen to people who might be in the know, there is a calm demeaner in the way they are adressing the issue.

Possible reasons the deal can't be sealed yet:
1) Still have a game to play (Kill, Riley, Sarkisian, Edsall, Stoops).
2) Their buyout reduces by $500,000 on December 15.
3) The lawyers & agents are sharpening their pencils.

A definite possibility. These things don't happen over night even when we expect that they will.

My wild a$$ guess . . .

is that they have worked a deal through an agent with one of the guys who still has a game left. I am thinking that it is either Randy Edsall or Chris Petersen. My hunch is that it is Petersen. I base my guess on (a) the statement made by Maturi that he has a candidate that was a pleasant surprise; (b) that Bruininks has stated that he is pleased with candidate pool; (c) that Bruininks reportedly told the boosters at the basketball game that they have their man; and (d) that Bruininks has said that he thinks that the fans will be pleased with the guy.

I know, this is thin. But who else would both be the surprise candidate that Maturi mentioned and still be playing? Certainly Edsall he should not be considered a surprise candidate - he pops up as a candidate in virtually every search. Same with the case of Hoke, Calhoun, Golden, etc. Who else would cause Bruininks to be excited enough to telll the boosters that they "got their man"? That statement says to me that they don't feel like they had to settle on a compromise candidate. I believe they saw Patterson and Petersen as the top of the list from the very beginning. Finally, if they indeed have their man, why would they wait to announce it unless there was still regular season football to be played.

There are many things about Edsall that could mean that he is the guy as well. From what I read, he may be very compatible with Maturi and Bruininks. But as I said, my hunch it is the guy from out west. A few weeks ago this would have excited me greatly. Now, I am not sure one way or the other. I would still prefer him to most of the others and still would not complain if it were true. He is certainly a guy who get the most out of players who are not the blue chippers. I am just wondering if we should be pursuing Mullen and wondering if Petersen can get his players to come east. In the end though, if he's the guy, I am on board.

Hillbilly, I've been thinking a lot about Petersen too. We really haven't heard anything factual about any of the top tier candidates, so there's no logical reason to rule them out - especially since we have yet to move on any of the second tier guys.

I missed that news. Who reported that?

I wish I could say the same, but I don't get this impression at all from Joel's email response yesterday. I would love to believe this is the case.

And . . .

from Petersen's point of view, it may be time to move on. I don't know if Kellen Moore is a senior, but logic and history tell us that at some point Petersen has to hit the downside of the sine curve where those players he signed just don't measure up. He has done everything he could do at Boise - he has a one loss season after a 23 or 24 game win streak and his team gets relegated to the Humanitarian Bowl - yikes! Were I him, I might want to try my hand in a bigger arena, where I would have a chance to go to a big time bowl if I can get a record anywhere near what I have had at BSU.

I know everyone would say that he could hold out for a bigger name program, he doesn't need a "coach career killer" school like the U. But the reality is that no one has hired him and many of the big time programs are going to shy away from a guy who did his winning in the WAC. How many ADs have the same attitude as Gordon Gee? The U, with the willingness to open up the checkbook and with new facilities might just be the place for him to see if he can take the next step.

Anyway, it is just a hunch.

I missed that news. Who reported that?

I don't think that was reported in the media. I believe it was posted on this thread by someone who had either heard or overheard Bruininks say that to a group of boosters.

Don't read too much into Maturi's e-mail

So far I've been impressed with his skill at not tipping his hand.

I agree--I think they've got their guy and are waiting for remaining commitments and contractual negotiations to conclude before sealing the deal and announcing it. The Bruininks comment actually was reported by Zach Johnson on The Gopher Report.

Hates

I missed that news. Who reported that?

I apologize, but I am really bad at pulling up the research unless I have a lot of time. I am old and those details get away from me. Maybe someone else can tell us. I recall that it was one of the posters who was at the basketball game hanging around with a group of boosters.

Someone can correct this if I'm wrong, but a poster here on GH relayed the "Bruininks told the boosters they have their man" news when he started the "I think Mullen is the guy!!!" thread, and Doogie relayed the "Bruininks very pleased with pool of candidates" news from when he talked with Fun Bobby after the Virginia BB game.

What email?

A response I got from Joel yesterday when I was pushing for a popular candidate and offered a small personal committment I would make should it happen.

His response to paraphrase was I was putting him in a box and we need candidates who are as interested in us as we are them.

You emailed Maturi thinking you could persuade him to hire the guy you want?

Seriously?

Very interesting, . . .

What candidate were you pushing?

Come on dude. You know the answer to that question. What you should be asking is with an AD who actually listens and responds to fan emails, is there any reason I shouldn't be making my voice heard at this point?

Whether he takes action on the voice of the fans is another story.

This was in regards to Mullen. I personally will be focusing my attention on other candidates. Everyone else is obviously free to do what they want.

I would take this to mean that Mullen has either said no or is acting coy. Either way he could not be the gotten man Bruininks was referring to (if he actually ever said this).

I really wouldn't read too much into the "We got our guy" comment. If you were doing a candidate search that ended in you getting someone outside of your top choices, would you really go and tell the boosters (the ones who support your programs with large donations) that you got a mediocre guy when they are not privy to who your top choice was in the first place?

No way! You would go in with a ear to ear smile boasting that "you got your guy".

Now, I'm not saying that we should be dissapointed and expect that this is the case at all. He could be telling the whole truth. I'm just saying that Bruinincks making this comment could mean a lot of things, and should be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm still optimistic that it's going to be a great pickup!

My Maturi hate aside, if we've got "our guy" and it's just an announcement away, they better break it dang soon. The media is getting crabby and making up lies, you've got Leach stirring up the fanbase to unparalleled frustration, and you've got other schools making their hires.
What will happen when one of our logical candidates gets hired somewhere else?
Imagine that fan outrage if we still don't have a guy and say Indiana hires Hoke or Miami gets Mullen or Washington St gets Bellotti? Oh boy.

I would take this to mean that Mullen has either said no or is acting coy. Either way he could not be the gotten man Bruininks was referring to (if he actually ever said this).

Agreed. I no longer believe we have our guy (as of right now) like I initially did relating back to the OP. I could be reading too much into the response, but Joel can't help being somewhat transparent, that's always been his style. Just my opinion, Mullen is off the board, but I know as much or less than the rest of you guys. My gut tells me we either can't meet Mullen's demands or he's never shown interest.

Could it be Patterson and he is just waiting to see the outcome of the Oregon & Auburn games this weekend to make sure he isn't missing out on a BCS Title game?

For what it's worth, Reusse says the "hot" rumor is that the U will announce their guy this weekend. He specifically said Friday at one point.

He didn't say where he's hearing that. For all I know, he could be basing that guess on what he reads here.

I think I've talked myself into thinking the silhouette on the gopher sports front page is going to be filled in with a picture of Chris Petersen. This madness needs to end soon!
