I am not smart enough to understand what we are trying to do. I think it comes down to the fact that our opponent's defensive line is in our backfield like they are jumping through the portal on Stargate. Sometimes there are three of them in there at the snap of the ball and I'm wondering how they jumped through the bodies of our offensive linemen. I will take that as a given and assume it is a major limiting factor to what our offense is supposed to be. But here is what I don't understand.
How can you establish a running game out of the shotgun. Whenever we attempt a running play, it seems like the call in the huddle is " OK, Duane, I'll bump into you and you take the ball from me." Is that how it is supposed to work? That's crazy - and not at all deceptive. At least when Rickie Foggie was running the option, the defenders had to defend against the handoff, the pass, a pitch to one of two running backs or him cutting upfield. And are any of our pass routes (besides the one successful fade today) designed to go more than 10 yards downfield. Again, I assume it is because the offensive line is not capable of providing any protection. But isn't that supposed to be Marquies' wheelhouse? Busting a run when the pocket breaks down? Is he being told to stay in the fricken pocket? So these offensive linemen are not small. What type of system are they being taught? I admit, I am clueless. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

In my opinion, it is entirely execution. Some of the best running teams in the country last season ran a lot out of the shotgun.

If you look at the leading rushers in the country last season, a large percentage of them ran out of the shotgun (Robinson, James, Newton, Lashoure, Kendall Hunter, Spann, etc.).

There are tons of examples of great running teams running out of the shotgun.

a lot with execution. I never liked the pistol or shotgun for running plays and never thought we should have gotten away from Mason's style of offense in any way whatsoever. The only broken with Mason's team was defense and that's because he wasn't allotted any good coordinators and couldn't recruit to the 'humpty dump'.

I would say, for a lot of these kids, it's all the damn different schemes they have learned here (mostly due to Brewster)

Let's take Du'ane Bennet for example:

2006- Mason/ power run
2007- Brewster/ spread
2008- Brewster/ spread
2009- Brewster/ pro-style
2010- Brewster/ power run
2011- kill/ pistol (lets call it)

Yeah... i'd probably just quit football if they made me learn all that BS while going to College..

Yep, I think that is part of our issue. But it's more than just the new systems (IMO).

We are just an untalented football team who ALSO doesn't execute.

Let's see....

If I had to guess, I have to go with the fact that they played at least FOUR Freshmen on the O-Line today (Gjere would have been 5?).

I'm no Vince Lombardi but that would be where I look first.

Good running requires a good OL and the threat of the pass.
Good passing requires a good OL, good receivers, a good QB, and the threat to run.

We currently possess ZERO of the above.
