Official: Collins named DC.

Only the best coaches tell their players that.

I laugh at myself all the time when yelling "get him" or "sack him" at the TV.
Sometimes I get the whole sentence "Throw the ball!" out before he is sacked!

I'm sure that would have prevented it ...

Well deserved. Pass defense has been the most consistent success factor for Gopher football for over a decade, and safety has been the program's best position group in that time.

It's never been as true as it is today. Coach Collins has a lot to do with that. Love the promotion for a loyal and productive coach.

Congrats to Danny!

Not at all trying to take a dump in the punch bowl, but:

part of me wonders how big a factor played into this of trying to prevent guys like Koi Perich and Kerry Brown from transferring out. Eg. to follow Hetherman to Miami (for 4-10x the NIL) or just plain anywhere for more NIL.

The obvious challenge to that is, why would that prevent that?? Maybe .. to prevent him (Danny Collins) from himself leaving to take a DC role elsewhere, and then bringing those players with him?It could be a really dumb thought. But I do have dumb thoughts from time to time.

Was Heatherman even on staff when those guys committed here? I really don't think they are making hiring decisions based on players staying around.

You don't think Koi Perich would give one thought at all to following his coach (Collins) to a new DC role at ______ (name the school for sake of argument)?

Who knows, maybe this move still only buys a year or two before that scenario happens. All we can do is enjoy the ride and trust/hope that Fleck is making the right call!

He might, he might not. I'm saying Collins was not given the role just to keep Koi happy.

Agree, not a 100% reason. My original question was wondering how big of a factor it may have played. 0% being a (strong) possibility.

And again not per se to make him happy, but rather to prevent him from following Collins elsewhere. I'm not at all saying it was a thing like Koi came to Fleck with demands. I doubt that. Rather, a proactive (somewhat) move by Fleck.

Seems like Danny and PJ have a pretty strong positive relationship. That could work for or against us depending on how Danny performs as a DC.

If he does well, I think the very strong relationship the two have means it will be less likely for Danny to jump ship for the DC position at P4 school. It might still happen, but I think it's less likely than it would be if we had hired someone else that PJ didn't have a strong relationship with (i.e. what just happened with Corey Hetherman). If he doesn't do well, I think it might cause PJ to hold onto him longer than he should (as we've seen him do in the past). Hopefully this isn't the case though.

If Danny Collins has aspirations to be a Head Coach eventually, and does well as our DC, he will likely be hired away for an HC job eventually. If he wants to coach in the NFL, and does well as our DC, he'll likely be hired away for an NFL DC job eventually. So I don't think it's worth considering those two possibilities until we see how he does.

Personally I'm optimistic about this hire. I hope he does well, and sticks around for a while.

Congrats to Danny!

I suspect it was not a factor. It sounds like Danny was the unofficial #2 for both Rossi and Hetherman. I think elevating him to DC was the result of PJ thinking he’s ready for the job. There would be other ways to give Danny a promotion and limit the chance of him being poached this year (make him Associate HC, Co-DC, etc.).

Yep, I do these all the time. I'm also known around the house for saying, "man, do we need a stop here." At which point my wife says, "oh, thank you for explaining that to me."

The reason it was a bit curious to me is that Collins was #3 in command on defense, if you go by titles. Hetherman was #1 with just plain "DC" title, Nick Monroe was #2 with "Co-DC" title, and Collins was #3 with I think a passing game coordinator title.

I get the feeling Monroe will be difficult to keep long term in his role. He’s turning out a lot of good players going back to his time at Syracuse as well.

Agree! But I worry that we keep naming DCs with no track record as a high-level DC. Nothing against Coach Collins, who has done a great job...just wonder why we are promoting Rossi, Heatherman, and now Collins and are never in the market for a proven commodity. We may have that strong of a pipeline (Rossi and Heatherman left for more $ and maybe prestige) but I don't think that is a long-term solution. Maybe I am wrong...

The guy has been in many schemes and knows defenses. Many are inexperienced simply in the leadership role. That's simply due to numbers. Each team has one HC, one OC, and one DC. If you want to be a DC, you either get promoted or find someone else to give you your first shot. MN isn't in the price range to hire proven DC's. There is a pecking order across all levels of football.

I think most high level DCs are looking for HC gigs. A lot of DCs with long track records aren’t actually that great.

Valid concern, assuming at some point it might not work out. But you have to look at the success our D is having over the last half dozen years and admit that maybe PJ knows what to look for in defensive coaches.

Fair enough.

Knowing nothing, and discounting the idea I put out about doing it (in some portion) to prevent Collins himself from leaving and possibly with Koi, just going by title rank I would've thought Monroe would become the DC and Collins the Co-DC.
