No, he's not a candidate, but the story noted his background. Was an assistant coach at New Hampshire in 2006.

Football isn't rocket science and I'd rather have someone who is smart, educated, and would probably be successful in other lines of work outside of sports than a well-connected meathead from the good old boys club.

There is a reason why Belichick and his Wesleyan degree beat Tice and his high school diploma when going to head to head.

I attended the NFL combine two years ago (Mike Singeltary was literally sitting behind me watching Brandon Pettigrew run the 40)and was amazed at how average most of the coaches there were. You'd hear them talking in the hallways, at lunch , etc and it wasn't as though I was out of place in terms of sizing up talent or intelligence or anything like that.

I guess my point is that after reading the Times article, I'll be mad if Joel goes with some unknown TE coach who went juco, but maybe not so much if it is an unknown guy who seems to be creative, successful, and smart even if he doesn't have the good old buys (Mack Brown, et al) endorsing him.
