on the Chip Armelin drive in OT.
I was ready to curse the out of control drive by Chip in OT when he kicked it over to the other side and the first official ruled out OB off of MN.
During the the replay, Dakich was commenting about what Crawford did or did not do on defense to deflect the pass, when I realized something sort of odd happened when Chip left his feet.
I slowed it down with the DVR and sure enough, yet another on D was clearly sliding, and moving on defense under an agressive offensive player then falling down. Chip did not even touch the defender, NU, yet #3 fell backwards with his arms flailing and hit the deck. Chip made an extremely athletic play to jump stop and change directions out of bounds to avoid #3 who was still moving under him and setting up the flop. You can see the separation between #23 and his shorts and pasty torso of #3 who violently was thrown backwards despite there being no contact. If Chip had risen up towards the basket a charge would have been called for sure even though the defender was moving all over the place then flopped.
This play is yet another example of how bad officiating, favoring defenders trying the draw a "charge". are getting bogus calls all the time, and changing the game for the worse.
Slow down the charge calls with your DVR and watch how the defenders move their upper bodies into the airborn driver, move their feet after the offensive player leaves his feet, and thrust themselves into the offensive player, yet still get rewarded with a charge. This stuff never used to be called this way. There is all sorts of side to side and forward movement by these defenders and attempts to create contact, yet they get he charge.
Until relatively recently in basketball the defender had to be waiting take charge, much like statue to get a call. The only exception was a blatent push off with the arms, or a hook. Did the NCAA send out a memo to the officials to make the game unwatchable?
No, but officials just seem to love drawing attention to themselves by making dramatic charge calls.
The NU player who flopped should have been called for a foul or T.
Lots of people paid a lot of money to see Michael Jordan. Not a lot of people are interested in seeing some slow overachieving guy from rural Indiana run under Michael Jordan, flop and get a call.
I blame Coach K and Bo Ryan for a lot of this BS basketball we have to see now. The officiating has changed for the worse in the last ten years with all these BS charging calls, and that is not what the fans want to see.
Watch #0 Novak for Michigan during the game tomorrow. He will do many of these suspect things on defense and get the calls.
