Say for a moment that Norwood plans to act under the realization that this hire needs to be an absolute homerun, in every aspect, and not just a 'safe' pick. This could likely be the defining hire of his tenure here. Perhaps he's so utterly confident in his connections, that not only is he planning to hire someone other than one of the big names, he's going to hire an assistant with the express intent of paying out a significantly lower initial salary. It could make him look like a genius if it worked out. Considering the scrutiny the department has been under with the football game cancellation, Tubby's buyout, and trying to raise funds for a practice facility, it would certainly help to alleviate some of that type of pressure, anyway. Thoughts?

It's a fantastic idea in the CAA and a great way to lose recruiting battles and set yourself back years in a league that is deep in coaching talent. This idea works better in football where it can take years to turn a program around, make a move like this in basketball and you could plummet from a 2nd round team straight to the bottom of the league.

I had that same thought. I didn't get who you wanted, but I did it on the cheap, trust me.

I sure hope NT isn't going cheap, unless he has to - meaning he couldn't find a top tier coach. But I've had the feeling he is going cheap ever since I rad the rumor that he offered Shaka 1.6 million. (Or was it 1.8.). Both of which were too low to draw him to the Gophers.

Note to that tim Brewster rooster: RUN, don't walk over to that vcu place and have them do a villa 7 profile on you and maybe you can blow our new norwoods sox right off him! There is a vacancy for a head coach at the U again. And now that you are an assistant coach...you fit the bill to get hooked up with an ad.
Just remember to emphasize that you are really in a "zone" and when you are in your zone, not only do you LOVE to recruit but you LOVE to sell yourself to athletic directors and that you always have fit a certain profile...
Just leave that question about whether you have ever been a head coach before blank and I think you would stand a really good chance to really impress the ad and his assistant that he brought up here from VCU. IF you get that far, the beauty is, our ad likes to get together with assistant coaches SO much that he and his partner in crime, that ellis from VCU guy will study lots of profiles and bring in your assistants for you. This just might be the hire of the century!

I don't think they are trying to do it cheaply, I think they want control. Maybe Flip isn't the only coach they insisted to have a say in the staff. I can see these basketball genuises thinking that they need to hire some of the next generation of the Villa 7 at their school. That could be a reason why they can't get any of the established coaches to take the job. When you hire a Shaka at a VCU he may need some help to establish a staff. He was a young coach without as many contacts. When you hire a proven coach at a successful program they know how to establish a staff and don't want the AD telling them who to hire. If this is true, our new coach will be a well respected up and comer that is willing to let the AD "help" him pick his staff.

I really think Flip is the only candidate they would do that to (want a say in picking the assistants) because of his lack of college experience. I can't see any reason for them to do that with any other coaching candidates. Why would they tell an established coach (who I'm assuming has had success) that they want to have a say in picking the assistants? I can't even see them doing this with an up and coming assistant from an elite program.

Agreed. Plus we really don't know what was involved with the Flip situation either.

Wait! What? Do you mean to say there are several rumors only, and no facts? No way, not on GopherHole.

Right. You have to tell a 58 year old coach who has coached here at the U as an assistant for 5 years, as a head coach in junior college for 4 years, 7 years in the CBA and as a coach in the NBA (a step above college) for 16 years who his assistants need to be. Meanwhile an up and coming assistant who hasn't even been a head coach, he picks his own guys. Brilliant.

Think about it, he hasn't been in the college scene in 25+ years. You don't think a lot has changed since he last had any affiliation with the college game. Also, I doubt Norwood/Ellis would actually pick his assistants. More likely, they would present him with a list of the top assistants based on their knowledge and connections and have Flip interview them and pick from that group.

Just because the NBA is a step above college doesn't mean an NBA guys is automatically over qualified to coach D1 basketball. There a significant difference between coaching in the NBA and college, mainly off the court duties. Dealing with 18-22 teenagers/young men is a lot different than 22-35 year old men.

Exactly.

I would be fine with a Flip hire. However, as you said, he hasn't coached a college basketball game in my entire lifetime. He hasn't coached a college game since the kids he is recruiting were born.

He needs the best assistant coaches money can buy as far as I am concerned and if he wants to use one of those spots on Ryan Saunders? No thanks.

No reason to question Flip's knowledge of X and O's. But like you guys are saying he would be in charge of the whole program, not just on court issues.

NCAA compliance, academics and other issues not pertinent to the NBA. Flip and a staff made up of NBA cronies would concern me greatly. Maybe Teague wanted some input on one assistant. Or like vcurams said, give him a list to pick from.

If he believes in an up-and-comer and ultimately goes with one, the lower salary would be an accompanying characteristic of the hire, not the objective going into it.
