Unbeaten Gophers get a touchdown pass from a speedy back from Davenport, Iowa. He will go on to be a 1st round draft pick of the Giants, fight on Iwo Jima as a marine officer and be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Can you name him?

Unbeaten Gophers win it on Dick Borstad's 26-yard field goal with 2:40 left. The ensuing kickoff is returned for a touchdown that is called back by a penalty. The returner will go on to a 7-year, 178-catch, 28-touchdown career with the Giants and Redskins. Later on, he will be the head coach of the Jets for 7 years, leading them to the playoffs twice. Can you name him?
The Minnesota quarterback has a big game, throwing a touchdown pass, recovering a Pitt fumble at the Gopher 1-yard line and swatting away a 4th down pass in the Minnesota end zone. A transfer from the University of Washington, he will just miss leading the Gophers to their first Rose Bowl in 1956. In 1957 he will appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, a distinction never equalled by any other Gopher. Can you name him?

Murray Warmath's first Gopher squad gets to 6-1. Gophers have 402 rushing yards, 161 by a back from Hastings who will be an All-American in 1954 before going on to an injury-plagued career in the CFL. He is much-revered today as a generous benefactor to the University. Can you name him?

Did we have any african american players on the team at that time?

I thought a lot of southern teams refused to play teams with black players around that time...

We played all of 2 road games out of 8 total games that year too, weird.

Go Gophers!

You have them all correct except for Sandy Stephens, who DID, however, come from the same hometown as the player in question.

They were upset that seat donations went up to $.50 per game from $.40 the year before.

It would be fun to have an archivist hit the University archives for old teams and bust out some stories on that, just out of curiosity.
