Notre Dame joins ACC (sort of)

When expansion became the rage, I've always kinda' wanted the Big 10 to add Notre Dame, seems like a natural fit, but agree with you about Delany. You're either all in the conference (and that includes football) or you're not. Delany and the conference did the right thing. I'm glad they didn't cow-tow to ND's independent football wishes.

I hope we don't ever have more than 12 teams. These super-conferences suck. 12 is perfect for football and basketball in my opinion.

So who else is the ACC going to add for all non-football sports to even things out? Villanova?

I still think UConn will end up in the ACC. Would give the ACC a goofy number for football (like when the B1G had 11 teams), but they'd work their around it.

Unless ND is planning and or posturing to be a full member of the ACC I don't really see what it buys them, the Big East is probably a better fit for them as far as basketball is concerned, is there a big advantage to be in the ACC for the non revenue sports, will they get academic benefits from partial membership in the ACC.

Sounds like the biggest benefits are stability, the ACC is not going anywhere while the Big East keeps morphing, and the guaranty of 5 football games each year. The ACC was willing to let them keep their independence in football so they took it.

I do wonder what it will do to the ND/Mich & ND Mich St rivalries. I'm guessing they will now alternate (along with Purdue).

The ACC was willing to let them keep their independence in football so they took it.

They are still quasi-independent, but they've ceded a lot of their flexibility, and for what gain? For example, they are now contractually obligated to play 5 ACC football games every year. When you add that to the games they would like to play every year in a perfect world (USC, Stan, BC, 3 service academies, Mich, MSU, Pur), the ability to schedule "all over the country" like they want to for recruiting purposes is almost entirely eliminated and their full schedule is basically set without much room for change year-to-year. Moreover, they now are bound by a clause that they must be within 1 game (e.g., 10 wins vs. 11 or 9 vs. 10, etc.) of the ACC champ in order for them to be selected ahead of that school by a bowl. They are not going to be able to go to plum bowl games with a less-than-stellar record like they used to be able to do.

Buyout clauses:

Big East.....$5 million and 27 months

ACC..........$20 million, not sure on timeline.

I'm sure the 27 months will be negotiated with Big East

With the huge buyout from ACC, it looks as if ND wants to cease being an independent they will be ACC, unless they have mega money.

ND has not gone to any plum bowls recently unless they qualified in the BCS Championship rotation (Sugar, Fiesta) and that does not change with the new agreement.

This year ND is going to play 4 ACC schools (or soon to be) already: Mia (Fl), BC, Pitt, Wake. Their fear was if more conferences go to 9 game schedules (ie Big 10), they would not have room for the Irish.
