The national analysts such as Tim Brando, Jay Bilas, and national fans who might have watched 10 or less games during the entire Tubby era think the firing is bad.

The local media who have focused solely on this one team 30+ games for 6 yrs straight are the ones who have the right to make their opinion. And they seem to understand how awful Tubby was.

So for you nationals analysts and national fans who know barely anything about the gophers... SIT DOWN SHUT UP.

The local fans and local media know the team's and Tubby's tactics and overall progress (or lack there of throughout 6 yrs here). Whatever someone very knowledgable of the program thinks, they have a right to think that. But if you barely see the team, you don't have a voice!

*My spiel for the night :)

Lots of national guys AGREE with the decision, which is rare for any firing but especially for a guy as well liked as Tubby. National guys who thought we made the right move include: Gottlieb, Forde, and Goodman. The Big Ten blogger for ESPN (who I am not a fan of), also thought it was time for Tubby to go.

Some disagree and some agree that's what happens when coaches get fired. There will be more or less criticism when the new coach is announced depending on who it is. Tubby wasn't awful in any way but he seemed to have lost a couple guys this year (Coleman, Rodney and Welch)

While I generally agree with the subject of your post, and I agree that Tubby did not form this program into the program that most of us expected of he and his salary, the fact remains that Tubby was far, very far from "awful".

I hope you don't really believe that.

All of the national media thought we were crazy when we fired Glen Mason - and we proved them correct when we hired Tim Brewster as his replacement. We are all hopeful that Jerry Kill will at least equal (and ideally surpass) the accomplishments of Mason. In the short term (ie 6 years after Mason was fired), however, the national media was correct. In the long term, it was a clear indication that the U administration is not content with mediocrity.

In my opinion, it all depends on the hire. If we don't hit a home run on this one, the rest of the country will scratch their collective heads at this decision and I will tend to agree.

Saw this quote on reddit and thought it was apt: "America is shocked and outraged because they know Tubby Smith, the brand; Minnesota fired Tubby because they bought into the brand, but only got Tubby Smith, mediocre coach."

National media and fans were going to think that anyway unless we gave Smith a lifetime contract and a blank check to do whatever he wanted. Not concerned about that part of it.

One thing that Teague has a track record of doing is hiring good, successful basketball coaches. He obviously has confidence in his ability to do so and his track record certainly backs up that confidence. At least until now. I'll roll with whoever Teague hires and trust that the coach will be successful. His background to this point is enough for me to trust his judgment here.

Good conversation late yesterday afternoon on 1500. Reusse pretty much blasted Tom Powers' take, the "this is the best we can do" crap. He simply stated that, when something like the Smith tenure doesn't work out, you have no choice but to try again. He thinks this program should go to the Tournament 7 out of 10 years and make an occasional Sweet Sixteen run. He pretty much said that the idea we can't do any better than Tubby's record is nonsensical, especially considering what other similar institutions (UW) have accomplished.

Funny thing was that Phil Mackey expressed even higher expectations of the program, and he got the vote in the curmudgeon vs. punk debate.
