Hard to believe Brew would pull a stunt like this (a la Mason) at peak recruiting season. Harder to think Maturi would. A bowl win would likely lead to an extension - probably modest, maybe two years. This is beyond strange...

i was thinking that this is a story that someone who wants brewster gone would pull.

Agree. Who knows what's real and what's not, but I wonder if Huff's change had anything to do with Patterson hearing the rumors and passing them on and Brewster not being able to deny it. Timing would fit.

It is interesting. But Brewsters dead if he goes into next year without an extension. If Maturi is incapable of making the best decision for the program, maybe Brewster feels he can influence it a little. Better to lose a recruit or two now than a whole season next year.

Why prolong the agony? Brewster has done NOTHING to prove he deserves an extension.

Honestly, how can Maturi extend him now? Even if there is no substance to the rumor that Brew started this whole thing, it will be spun in the media as if he did. With an extension, Maturi would be seen as kowtowing to a coach who is trying to flex his muscles, which, frankly, is an untenable position. I'm starting to come to the conclusion that firing Brewster may be the only option Maturi has left.

Jeebus, why do I come back to this team year after year after year....

Yeah, knee-jerk reaction - fire him and bring in the next guy for a few years. I just do not understand that logic. At some point we need some continuity; give the guy a chance at another recruiting class or two and let's see what his current recruits do as upperclassmen. If things pan-out, the U is in a much better position than if we abandon ship and start from scratch again.

I don't disagree. I've generally been a pretty strong supporter of Brew. But with his current contract situation, recruiting becomes difficult for Brewster. And, in my opinion, there's no way Maturi can extend him now, what with this whole imbroglio going on. So, unbelievably, the best thing to do might be to can him.

I'm not sure...I'll probably change my mind with a good night's sleep. And some bourbon.

The bourbon is the one thing that is certain at this point.

Maturi can certainly extend Brewster's contract even after the Kansas thing. Many schools extend contracts to their coaches after their names come up for other jobs. And it usually works out for everyone's advantage; the school shows it wants the coach to stay, and the coach behaves gratefully and gets more money. All Maturi has to do is move up his evaluation a few weeks and work out a deal. That doesn't seem too hard to do.

this joel maturi we are talking about! it shouldn't be that hard for an AD to make a decision before other top name coaches are gone and before he starts to completely F-UP recruiting (which maturi is doing), but we have seen that maturi always makes it "that" difficult.

I think a giant gay orgy in the gopher locker room would be worse for recruiting. Just saying there are worse things.

I'm with Bronko on this one. Maturi is not cut out for a B10 AD job. He's a bright guy but does not have the rest of the skill-set required for the position.
