Not fouling might be behind defensive improvement.

At least partially, or maybe just a sign of improvement.

We still foul a little too often, but we were obviously hacktacular a season ago.

More here.

If I'm reading that correctly we have only decreased our opponents free throws attempts by 3 for every 100 field goal attempts. That mean's we've committed roughly 1 less shooting foul every game. While a slight improvement I don't think that would have much of an impact on the overall defense. On top of that I would guess the 2011-2012 stats include the B1G games where we are playing against better competition.

As GopherGack mentions, a major issue with the screenshot comparison is the current season figure being against nonconf opponents and the 2011-12 figure being vs. all opponents. Yes, Gophers were at 36.7 a year ago, but that includes 18 games at 43.3 (regular season Big Ten games).

The improvement in defense is in opponent's eFG% (including the impact of increased shot block %) and to a lesser degree, turnovers.

Minnesota's defense so far is overrated, but playing Mbakwe more would help some.

Would you please explain based on what kind of data, Gopher's defense is overrated. Didn't we read something from USC's coach about the Gophers basketball yesterday. You knew more than Kevin? Maybe you should apply for some coaching jobs????

Go Gophers
