UNIVERSITIES ANNOUNCE PLANS TO FORM CONFERENCE

Presidents and chancellors from 16 universities met in Dallas Sunday to discuss future conference membership plans and agreed to work on forming a new intercollegiate athletic association that would begin competition in the 2013-14 academic year.

This presidentially led association will ensure stability and be built upon the principles of operating at the highest level of integrity and sportsmanship, enhancing the student-athlete academic and competitive experience, bringing fiscal discipline into athletics and ensuring competitive fairness.
“This is an exciting development that will stabilize the current conferences and create the first truly national conference with members in five time zones and television viewership from coast to coast. This partnership brings together like-minded institutions to improve the integrity and stability of intercollegiate athletics,” said UNLV President Neal Smatresk. “We are moving our plans forward rapidly and expect to complete our conversations in the near future. Look for further announcements soon as we work together on this exciting new venture.”
Universities involved in the discussions were the United States Air Force Academy, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Colorado State University, East Carolina University, Fresno State, University of Hawaii, Marshall University, University of Nevada, Reno, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Rice University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Texas at El Paso, Tulane University, The University of Tulsa and University of Wyoming. With the exception of Hawaii as a football only member, the participation would involve all sports.

The structure of the new conference will likely include:
· Membership of 18 to 24 universities
· National scope from the Atlantic Seaboard to Hawaii
· Championship football game format that includes semifinal match-ups
· Championship basketball tournament
· Regular season scheduling in divisions
· NCAA FBS affiliation
· Mechanisms to emphasize and improve academic standards and fiscal responsibility

The presidents and chancellors will have follow-up meetings over the next six months to fully develop the operational issues essential to the formation of the association.

This has been discussed for a while. It's just official now. Can't wait for that Hawaii-ECU tilt.

Trying to make sense of this.

Mountain West - That takes care of all members of this conference I believe. I think Boise State, San Diego State, and TCU were already gone.

Air Force
Colorado State
New Mexico
UNLV
Wyoming

WAC - Leaves a number from this leaugue unattached, Idaho, Lousiana tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State .

Fresno
Hawaii
Nevada

USA - I think this covers everybody from this conference, Memphis, SMU, UCF were already gone.

East Carolina
Houston
Marshall
Rice
Southern Miss
Tulane
Tulsa
UAB
UTEP

It looks like it will result in less conferences. A "truly national conference" is some spin, people generally prefer regional conferences. C-USA, the MWC and some of the WAC go away and will be replaced by this new conference.

If the WAC remnants attempt to remain as a conference, that will be a reduction of one conference. If they move down to FCS, go independent or join another conference (Sun Belt?) that would be a reduction of two conferences.

Hopefully Hawaii finds a way to make Louisiana Tech a yearly non-conference game. I'm gonna miss that matchup.

Fresno, Nevada and Hawaii (football) have already left the WAC. So this has nothing to do with that conference. This is essentially the CUSA-MWC merger happenning with a single all-new conference structure.

This is a smart idea for the MWC and CUSA. Their football schedules will not change much. And their conference champion will probably end-up being comparably competetive to whoever wins the Big East or ACC.

Also, it is very likely that the Big East football experiment fails and some of their new members leave after a couple seasons. A conference with 21 schools (7 of which have no football, and 1 that openly admits the conference's football schedule is not worth its time) is a disaster. The only way they keep anything resembling a BCS-AQ is if Notre Dame becomes a full-member.

So the MWC commish wants the Gophers job because he potentially is about to be unemployed?

There ain't no "potential" here, in every sense of the word.
