It's not that it wouldn't be a good story but not this year if it comes down to an us versus them type of thing.

Beyond huge game for us on Sunday.

John Shurna already had committed to play for Northwestern when a friend's father stumped him with the following trivia question: What college basketball program has never reached the NCAA tournament?

That's how Shurna, a 6-foot-8 forward from the Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn, learned of Northwestern's dubious distinction as the only school from one of the six major conferences that never has earned an NCAA bid.

"He was probably just teasing me," said Shurna, a former all-state player at Glenbard West High. "I'm from Illinois, and there are a lot of U of I fans."

Shurna's friends might not be able to make that wisecrack much longer. Northwestern (16-7 overall, 5-6 in the Big Ten) heads into its final eight games of the regular season with a legitimate shot to earn that elusive NCAA invitation.

In a year when the New Orleans Saints finally won the Super Bowl, why shouldn't Northwestern end its own tortured history? While they're careful to avoid looking ahead, the Wildcats can't help but imagine the possibilities.

"There'd be a lot of chaos around campus," junior point guard Michael Thompson said. "It would be a great thing to be around."

Northwestern wouldn't have a good enough resume to crack the 65-team field if the tournament brackets were announced today, but the Wildcats seem poised for a late-season surge.

From a Chicago Tribune article:

"Their chances have mostly come and gone," Lunardi said. "I root for underdogs like everyone, but this is not the year to buy Northwestern stock.

"This is as nicely as I can say it: I have a better chance of getting a date with Scarlett Johansson than Northwestern does of making the NCAA tournament."

I guess the home media, like demanding fathers, are always tuffer on their boys. :)

You can definitely kiss any chance they had bye-bye after tonight's effort in Iowa City.

NU is done. Losing to the worst team in the big ten Iowa by 17. I don't know if they can recover from that.

The boys need to be careful about looking past Michigan. Any team with Manny Harris is dangerous, and a loss to them would be a major set-back.

Penn State is the worst team in the big10 and I would argue that Iowa is better than Indiana as well. Iowa won in Bloomington and has just as many conference wins as the hoosiers.

All three are the Big Ten bottom feeders, they can beat each other up on any given day.

Valid Point and probably accurate. Iowa still plays Indiana again and NU so maybe they can find a way to win a few more games and prove that they are not the worst team in the conference.

If Iowa shoots 50% from 3pt range like they did last night, they can hang with anyone.
