Exhibition Slated at Minnesota
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State will play an exhibition basketball game at the University of Minnesota this fall, according to Athletic Director Jeff Konya.
The RiverHawks and Golden Gophers will meet at a time to be determined on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
“This will be another marquee game on our athletics calendar for 2010-2011,” said Konya, who earlier inked an agreement for Northeastern State’s football team to play at North Dakota on Sept. 18 of this year. “We are continuing to upgrade our athletic schedules to give our student-athletes a quality experience.
“Having the opportunity to play an NCAA Division I opponent, coached by (Tubby Smith) one of the most tenured and successful basketball coaches in the history of the game, is something our student-athletes will remember for a lifetime.”
Minnesota was 21-14 a year ago and earned its 11th NCAA Tournament bid, and third under Smith. Smith, who has 495 career wins, is the former head coach at Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky.
Northeastern State narrowly missed the 2010 NCAA Division II Tournament despite a 20-9 mark under head coach Larry Gipson. The RiverHawks’ mentor says the game could pay dividends for his team later in the season.
“We are really looking forward to the challenge of playing a game with a Big Ten school in a Big Ten atmosphere,” said Gipson, who last year earned his 500th win as a college coach. “I am good friends with Tubby Smith and Joe Esposito (Gophers’ Director of Basketball Operations) and through conversations with them we were fortunate enough to have them offer us the chance to come and play.
“Games of this caliber can help us become tougher and a more competitive team in our division.”
It is unknown whether the game will be televised as part of the Big Ten Network.
