This coming Gopher season marks the first playing multiple BCS home opponents since the Monson/Molinari campaign of 2006-07. That season three BCS teams visited The Barn, Iowa State, Clemson and Arizona State.

I'm shocked to see how few BCS teams Bruce Weber has brought to Illinois. Weber has really taken that program down a couple notches since Self's recruits left. I know Illinois typically schedules some good mid-majors like Gonzaga and typically has some good neutral site games, but it was surprising to see how few BCS OOC teams he has had there of late.

Would people complain about the non-conference BCS opponents if the Gophers played the same teams without the context of the ACC-B1G challenge?

In fairness to Weber, I only counted games on a true home court. Certainly Illinois has played several "quasi BCS or BCS-type home games" @ the United Center (Arizona, Gonzaga, etc.) during this time span, but in Illinois' case I only count home games vs. BCS schools (sorry Gonzaga) played at Assembly Hall.

Certainly I'm aware that playing some non-BCS programs (i.e. Gonzaga, Butler, Xavier, etc.) at home is much more attractive than playing weak BCS programs (Oregon State, USF, etc.). The gist of it is, for some reason -- intentional or not -- under Tubby the Gophers haven't played many home games vs. BCS opponents compared to the rest of the conference. 3 of the 4 were required (ACC Challenge). I'm just happy we'll see two (Va Tech, USC) this season

Answer- yes.

Thank heaven for the ACC challenge or we would be down to one in 4 years. The scheduling has to get better. We don't have to play a top 10 or 20 team but we need to play a few teams each year where people go into the evening excited about the game. We used to play teams like Cincinatti, Marquette and others, now it's the ACC challenge or nothing.

I'm assuming that without the challenge we would still play the same number of BCS opponents. I'd like to think that all the games wouldn't be against directional state.
