I thought the Gophers just continued their poor play that started with Northwestern and lasted through the end of the regular season.

The staff went with the new "power" run formations way too often. We were not playing a great defense in Kansas, and giving the ball to Eskridge (probably are 5th best option on offense) over and over again was just dumb football. DeLeon averaged under 2 yards a carry and chipped in a fumble too. Weber should have been in the shotgun far more often on first down. I didn't see any improvement from the Oline, which still can't pass block or run block effectively. I didn't see another receiver make a play down the field, and I didn't see a running back make an impressive run. There was nothing new on offense that we can look to as a positive going in to '09.

What the hell happened to our defense? They got shredded all day, allowing 14 straight completions through the air at one point. I wish we'd have 4 Dlineman on the field at all times. Giving up those 3rd and forevers was vintage Gopher defense from the past decade. Willie V was probably the only standout...and he's played his last game in the Maroon and Gold. It's hard to be excited about a defense that has regressed this much going in to next season.

Special Teams? Lets see, a kick out of bounds to start the game, muffed our first chance at a kick return giving us terrible field position and to top it off we allowed a blocked punt.

So we failed badly in all 3 phases, and that's not even to mention the horrendous penalties. The late hit out of bounds (really? again?), the sideline penalty after the sack, and Eric Small's roughing the passer. Then you had our typical 2 false starts after big plays.

We need a great offseason of strength and conditioning and some great last month additions to this recruiting class. The staff better find a way to win that stadium opener against Air Force, atleast they don't have to worry about their pass defense in that one.

I think you missed a few things

I agree with you on the play calling. Being able to go to the power run at times doesn't mean that you do it all the time. I didn't seen enough deception in the play calling and the KU safeties and LBs were selling out for the run at times and we didn't make them pay for it.

However, I don't agree with you about no one making plays. Green made a very nice downfield catch. Pittman had the trick play, but also made at least two other catches and got some yards. Even DaJon McKnight got a couple of nice plays near the end of the game.

There was only the one mistake on the Special Teams. Stoudermire was great on KO returns and Monroe started kicking deep and got touchbacks.

We do have to cut down on the stupid penalties. Most of them were real, but the refs made some real mistakes (Davis PI and no holding on KU).

So, there is certainly still work to do, but we improved from 1-11 to 7-6. Anyone who thought all the problems would be solved in one year were deluding themselves. Progress is undeniable, but more is necessary.

At one point

toward the beginning of the 4th qtr the gophers were threatening with a first down on Kansas 10 yard line. I told myself---director--cue the false start. Here is where we always seem to get a false start. Sure enough. There it was . False start number 66 I think it was. Enough of that nonsense. It ruins about every drive.

One important plus ...

we were able to implement new blocking schemes while reshuffling the OL yet again and they were able to do o.k. I think this bodes well for new year in that we have more new people to integrate and more schemes to add before the OL is ready for prime time On defense, however, the defensive backfield needs major work IMHO. A lot of times they are barely playing the man let alone playing the ball. It seems like they were more aggressive at the start of the season. I'd rather see them get burned being aggressive than playing passive.

The Gopher coaches knew they had no answer for KU on defense. The strategy was obviously to run as much clock as possible on O and try to keep it close. Our lack of athleticism was obvious. We just don't match up right now, so the coaches try and find ways to cover for it. The only chance we had to win last night is if KU handed us the game. We are not in their league, talent-wise.

there were some positives

the first quarter was really nice for the offense, an 80 yard drive. also stoudamire, even though he muffed the opening kickoff (lets hope he cuts down on this) shined. great kick return, and even some nice plays on the offense. he could be good.

but overall, we need a LOT of improvement. but we improved a lot from 2007 to 2008. if we make that same improvement to 2009, then i will be happy.
