Nit-ology 2011 Gophers a 4 seed

So our consolation prize for gagging down the stretch could be Michael Jordan's other son (Marcus) making a visit to The Barn?

I'm looking at a lot of those teams and I'm not real hopeful of a Gopher victory without a Nolen return.

Just a thought (albeit not a very positive one). If the Gophers get a 1st Round NIT game at the Barn - I believe they could face the possibility of establishing some sort of modern-day record of 6 straight losses at the Barn. Monson lost 5 in a row at the Barn in 2001 and Dutcher had 5 straight Barn losses in 1979. Prior to that back in 1932-33, Dave McMillan & the Gophers lost 8 Barn games in a row including a loss to Carleton.

This was a rather cursory perusal of the Eric Thrall website - so it is subject to further investigation if anybody is interested in those kinds of records - not including forfeited games.

edit: Someone informed me that Clem lost 7 in a row at the barn in his first year - the 86-87 season.

Not sure if anyone else caught this or posted about it elsewhere. Doogie, on Joe Anderson's show last night, characterized the 8/9 BTT game as a play-in game for the NIT based on what he's heard. He also reports - again based on what he's heard - that the Gophs would turn down a CBI invitation.

DW, correct me if I got any of this wrong.

I find it hard to believe we go from a 4 seed to out by losing to NW. Though I am mildly surprised NW isn't in the NIT projection now. I'd also be surprised if we turn down the CBI. Do they still have the minimum ticket sales requirements? I thought they got rid of that. UVa lost quite a bit on that deal a couple years ago and so did almost everyone. I don't know how they will get anyone to accept if they didn't change that.

It's certainly possible we could be left out, especially if a couple of the Big Ten's bubble teams lose right away in Indy. For argument's sake, let's say of Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State only 1 of 'em makes the NCAA (let's go with Michigan). That leaves Sparty, Penn State, Northwestern and the Gophers as NIT candidates. If the Gophers lose to NW, they clearly would be 4th in the pecking order of those 4. I can see the NIT going 3-deep in the Big Ten, but not 4. With the automatic qualifiers for the NIT (i.e. Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Fairfield, Florida Atlantic, Murray State. ... and more likely to come) there's a lot less room for also-rans from the power conferences than there used to be.

So I guess what I'm saying is, if you want the Gophers in the NIT as a certainty, in the event of a Gopher loss to NW you best cheer for the Big Ten's bubble teams to make the NCAA.

I didn't have a problem rooting for wins in the BTT to make the NIT in 1998. Even though that season was a disappointment too, I remember how great it was to beat MSU and become NIT-eligible. I can't do it now. If we lose to NW we don't really deserve it anyway.

I'm with you on that one. Not going to get worked up over whether beating NW means the Gophers get to play in the NIT. Just want them to win for the sake of seeing them win another game. It seems like it's been 5 years since the game in Iowa City.

Turn down a CBI bid.

Washington hosted a CBI game a few years ago, and they took a massive bath on it (not only did the department lose six figures on the home game, they lost to a putrid Valpo team).

I should have added in the opening post that I don't think the guy who puts that together is exactly the Joe Lunardi of the NIT Tournament.

It's probably a crapshoot of where we would end up.

I know I'll be on the edge of seat. :)

I'm trying to decide how much money you'd need to pay me to sit and watch any NIT game, including one with the Gophers playing. Probably $30, or so.

I've heard from reliable sources that we won't make the Nit with a loss. And by reliable source I mean Doogie and also someone else on this board that I can't remember.
