per ESPN:

O’Leary, a senior from Florida State University, has been named the country’s outstanding tight end by the Friends of John Mackey, becoming the first winner from FSU. This marks the fifth occasion in Mackey Award history where the award recipient was a finalist the season prior. He will be presented with The John Mackey Award during The Red Carpet Special at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.

In his four years playing at Florida State, O’Leary has established a reputation for his elite blocking ability and strong receiving prowess and 2014 was another outstanding year for him. The senior recorded 47 receptions for 614 yards & seven touchdowns and his outstanding blocking helped Florida State average 34.8 points and 434.7 yards of total offense. Nick will now lead his team to the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual and a shot at the College Football Playoff National Championship.

Go Gophers!!

Too bad Maxx didn't win the award but O'Leary was certainly deserving of it as well. Guess Maxx just has to come back next year now in order to win the award next season. :)

Predictable.

Very.

Besides the fact that he plays for Florida State and Maxx plays for Minnesota, it was senior vs. sophomore, and to O'Leary's credit, he had a hell of a finish: 208 yards and four touchdowns over his final three games.

He was also a finalist for the award last year so clearly he was on their radar and that probably helped push him over the top this year. Maxx certainly would have been deserving of the award but again tough to have much issue with O'Leary winning outside of the fact that his winning means our guy didn't.

Random fact: he is also Jack Nicklaus' grandson.

Maxx would have won it if we had a better passing quarterback. Let's be fair, a lot of O'leary's success is because, he had Jameis Winston throwing to him.

I rarely watch those high school games on ESPN, but O'Leary's team happened to be on during his senior year in HS. The Golden Bear was in attendance for that game.

Here's some Maxx Williams highlights. Hope we get to see these type of plays for at least one more season.

And he gave the finger to the fans, right?
