per Zgoda:

The Wolves are in contract discussions to bring former Gophers star Bobby Jackson back to Minnesota and back to the franchise as a player development coach to replace David Adelman, according to a league source.

Jackson starred for two seasons for that Gophers team that reached the 1997 Final Four -- or didn't, if you're the NCAA -- and played in the NBA for both Flip Saunders with the Wolves and Rick Adelman in Sacramento and Houston.

My colleague Sid Hartman phoned in the Jackson news to the sports desk late last night, too late for it to get into the paper, and a source confirmed it this morning.

Go Gophers!!

That's a solid job for Bobby Jackson. Flip is taking care of his Gophers and former players.

Maybe if Richard Pitino isn't working out well enough, or working too well and bolts for "greener pastures", perhaps HC Bobby Jackson could be sometime in the future for Gopher hoop fans to ponder. :?

Good luck.

And I am the biggest BJ fan of all time.

BJack's 1996-97 season was one of the most dominant and fun to watch performances in the history of Gopher basketball. The Clemson game alone when he simply refused to lose remains one of the best performances I've ever seen in person (he couldn't dislodge Jack Morris in Game 7), but there's no way in hell the U would ever bring him back in a coaching capacity after his role in the academic fraud disaster.

I thought his overtime performance against UCLA was pretty great.

There's about as much chance of that as Nick Saban being the next football coach. Teague may be less uptight than Maturi, but there's zero chance he would ever get a hire like that past his superiors. None.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I imagine you've got some pretty stiff competition.

Good point.

When was that?

Now, if he had only sold 9600 kilos of heroin..........

Oops. I think I was also thinking of the Clemson game. I got that one wrong.

Just busting your chops. :) I was at the game and it was the greatest performance I have ever seen live for one of my teams. Keep in mind he had 4 fouls midway through the 2nd half and it went to DOUBLE OT.

Bobby Jackson is what every U of M 4* or 5* shooting or combo guard recruit should aspire to in terms of clutch performance and sheer heart! Vaughn and Whitehead please take note.

His improvement from the first few games of the non-conference season as a junior through his senior year was fantastic to watch.

His conference championship performance at home against Illinois when he stole the ball with less than a minute to play, tip toed down the sidelines, and dunked for the clincher remains one of my great Williams Arena memories.

...and had to take over at PG because Harris' second half arm injury knocked him out of the game.

Bobby Jackson is one of my favorite Gophers ever, but hiring an assistant coach who was let go by Sacramento doesn't exactly instill me with a lot of confidence Flip is going to get it done at Target Center. Lot of inbreeding, which seems to be Taylor's preference.

I don't think Jackson's being brought in as a "regular" assistant. It's some other title. He's replacing David Adelman, who held a lower position but the Wolves are promoting to a full time assistant. In other words, the Wolves may be getting a guy somewhat overqualified (or well qualified) for the job.

Also, the Sacramento coaches were being let go because of a change in ownership, not because the coaches were bad. (In my opinion, it's hard to judge coaching of most NBA teams anyway. The teams that drafted great players win, the teams without them don't).
